..So i'll probably be removing the stock step(nerf)bars from my regenade to allow for maximum ground clearance on this beach buggy (a lift may be in it's future before spring too so that would help even more) however removing the step bars will make it much more difficult to reach up&over onto the roof to latch and unlatch my rooftop fishing pole racks (hey i'm only 5'6  ) Now..I've managed to test this situation out ahead of time by using the inside of the door steps to access the roof but it just doesn't give me enough 'reach-around room' to the roof racks  and the existing door trim plastic doesn't seem to have much grip either. (btw I was researching addtl door sill covers but every brand that I've seen are plastic/other material and seem to be for "coverage" only, rather than assisting in foot grip) ..any suggestions that might help me with this? thanks! 8) h3ll..i might even risk it and leave the nerfs ON if I can't find an alternative solution!

you could just pack a step stool when you pack your poles

I would purchase a tire step. They fit over your tire and have a tread on them. I believe JC Whitney carries them. They are very handy for washing and waxing your rig, and I am sure they would give you more then enough height to reach the roof rack. Infact, I am including the link below.

Hope this helps.

Can you not reach around enough by just standing on top of the tire?
I can reach past the middle of my roof from on top of the tire and traction is not a problem.
hehehehe....... we both said "reach around".....hehe

Lay your back down, put something on it to keep it clean and just step onto it. That's how I access my basket.

yeah...what about those rock rails..do you lose any clearance w/those?? How do they mount? Do you need to apply an extra layer of "grip" paint or anything?

The CRS (Carolina Rock Shop) Rockrails have an available nerf bumper, which I use as a step all the time when tying the kayaks on the roof.

If you're thinking door sills, what about just going to a Depot or Lowe's and getting some of that black friction tape the put at the end of steps for old people? Just slap it on and get instant grip?

I just stand on the rear tires when I need to use the roof rack.
I'm about the same height and don't have reach around problems. Couldn't resists.

Skateboard grip tape works very well for this too... I use my door sill to reach the roof of my Jeep

wow, some good ideas thanks guys, i was in a dead end with ideas but after your feedback i did some further googling and i think ill probably get these AVS universal stepshields from amazon (they're only like 25 bucks for a set of two and they're trimmable for a custom fit. and who knows maybe ill eventually get those rock rails in the near future too(thanks for the pics dog_party!) ..either way, now i can take those nerfs off and still be able to reach around

Actually..looking at the driver's side door, I already have step shields!
How hard are the nerf runners to take off btw?

Probably a couple of rusted bolts... Just spray with a good penatrating oil and they come right off
