Post subject:  Leaking roof, No interior Lights, No Sirius

It has been raining here for a good day and a half and my jeep sets outside while I am at work every day. I got in it tonight and noticed that it seemed extra dark when first opened the door. I looked back and noticed that my rear two interior lights were not on. I get out and open up the back gate and there is a puddle of water on top of my cargo cover and the whole rear compartment is wet. I look up at the rear interior light and there is water dripping from it. There was about a 3inch ring around the light and the headliner that was soaking wet and dripping water.

I put a towel under neigh of it to catch some of the water on the ride home. I get in to drive home and my satellite radio will not tune in. It says that it is on but does not get a signal.

I get to my house and put her in the garage to dry out. I look on top of the roof where the factory mounted Sirius antenna is mounted and notice that it is very loose.
I am going to rip into it tomorrow morning and figure out if the water is coming in from the Sirius antenna or somewhere else... Anyone else have this problem or offer any other suggestions?

You just figured out your leak by yourself, the sat antenna mount.Could also check the 3rd brake light and rear washer nozzle, they can lead to leak in the rear roof area.

I second Lizard's vote...i'd check the 3rd brake light seal...on my ford ranger (and many others) it was always this

So I couldn’t wait until tomorrow to figure out what was leaking (it bothered me too much). So I pulled back my headliner and sure enough the bolt holding on the Sirius antenna was VERY loose. I put my hand on the antenna on the roof and I could move it all around. So I tightened down the bolt and put some water proof sealant around the back side of the bolt. The antenna on the roof no longer moved around. While I was poking around I did check the third brake light and everything seemed dry around it so I left it alone. To make sure that it no longer leaked I got a hose and sprayed the roof where the antenna is and third brake light and no more leak.
I got a hair dryer and dried out the headline and made sure that water did not get into anything else.
I put the headliner back in and just from sitting and drying out my interior lights worked again (hope that they stay working)
Also my Sirius radio now works again.

Thanks for the suggestions on checking the antenna and third brake light.
Wonder why this happened? Did it just come loose over time? Or was it never that tight from the factory?

While not common, this loosening of the fastner can happen if the installer (factory or dealer) didn't properly torque the bolt down. You should see all the people with sun roof drain tube problems...!

I think that it may have just come loose over time from the factory not tightening it down enough initially. I am confident that it will not leak anymore but I will always keep my eye on it now to insure that it is tight.

Last year I had a problem with my sunroof seal. I got water dripping into the cabin through the passenger side sunshade. I traced water from the sunroof over the headliner to the sunshade were it leaked out.

Hearing from you guys makes me feel a little better that it is just not me having these problems!

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the club!

The Liberty is one of the most robust and capable small SUV's out there (save for it's front differential.) So once you get all of the initial bugs worked out, the KJ will shine in almost every single task that you ask of it.

Thanks for the Welcome!

...and I agree It is a great SUV and has been one of the best vehicals I have owned. I did have a few small problems when I first got it in 05'. First I had two rear brake calipers freeze up on me (the same side I might add both times) that resulted in needing new roters and brakes but was covered under warrenty, and the leaking sunroof that sorta fixed it self. ANd the front ball joints went but again covered under warrenty.

My jeep is perfect for me, It takes me to and from work, does well in the snow and ice, hauls my dirtbike and DJ trailer and lets me go and enjoy offraoding/camping.

Couldnt be happier!

Thanks again for the info, seems like a really great forum.
