Has anyone made a rack that could attach to the spare tire mount? something that could be used for gas can, shovel, etc. |

To much weight on the swing gate ,trust me I have on that is made by Garvin ind. for the TJ it has 2 out riggers that go from the out side corners to the body mounts of the jeep and also attaches to the tail gate it moves the spare tire mount so it is also held by the rack if you look in quadratec or 4wd Hardware you can find what I have it seems like a really strong design but my gate still bent and I probably have never carried over 50# + the spare out on the trail ,it is rated for 250# I guess in my eyes why would you want to do that with a KJ any way? just get a roof rack and be done with it |

i have a rack, but i like the idea of it on the rear. i cant see it weighing more than the spare. i think with the tire in the roof rack and this idea on the rear, it would look good. i dont know, just something i was thinking of. |

oh yeah drop the spare and I would say you are good for 75# max remember that the spare does not move but your cargo in that rack may which will put a lot more stress on the rear gate Take the rack on the TJ we use it to carry a small ice chest with drinks and lunch for 2-4 people in it and a 2 gallon water cooler ,some times on work days we carry a trash bag on it that is about it and some how my gate still bent you start carrying things like a gas can with 5 gallons of gas you got 30# right there and how often do you need spare gas? I have seen it once and that was on a rig that should not have been on the trail we were on and he ripped off a fuel line and when some one else noticed he had lost about 6+ gallons he was trying to get it restarted I just know that I have seen more flats and broken dana 35's then any thing I have seen U-joints and break lines now I could really see the need for say a high lift mount If I were to do it I would get a mount to hold a high lift jack worked out and a CB whip |

good thinking. it would work if u had the tire on the roof and then it would be easier to make something there as well. |

it would work but is it worth it? is there a lack of easily accessible space in the KJ? this is the only reason I put it on the TJ Look guys when I decide to do something to my rig I look at it in terms of function and what purpose does it serve? Take the KJ and if it were my trail rig I would have some kind of mount for the high lift jack on the spare and the spare would be just as easy to get to as my tools but the rest would be behind the seat put it on the top and it is a P.I.T.A. to get to Now take the TJ I needed a place for my ice chest that I could get to easy the rack was the only option and it is still a P.I.T.A. it is to high so I have to park with the back to a log or hill to get in it but that is better than having it flopping around the back seat Now if you took the time and effort to build a better skid plate or maybe a muffler skid? how about some front LCA skids or something like the "OX guards" that they use on the front of 4wd ATV's to protect the CV boots then you would have something Just my crooked view on things |

ive done made better skids. and was thinking about the LCA skid too. there just isnt a good place for a gas can on the KJ other than the rear. i wouldnt put it on the rack while wheeling cause it hits everyting and i dont want gas inside my rig eaither so this isnt a bad idea. nor is the LCA skid of the muffler skid. oh and my high lift is mounted to my rack and isnt going anywhere |

but do you really need to carry a gas can on your Jeep? I know that I can wheel all weekend in the TJ and burn less than 1/2 a tank so the KJ has to be better I have seen maybe 1 jeep in the 10 years that I have been really off roading that had a jerry can and it was just for show I simply dont see a need so I say dont bother To me carrying spare gas is almost like doing a 4" lift and running 33's on a TJ but then dropping your T-case skid 1.5" to get rid of drive line vibes ,just do a 2.5" lift and run 32's because off road .5" is nothing then when you get some more money do an SYE and a high clearance skid and have more clearance than guys who run the 4" lift and 33's on a rubi that is my way of thinking ,First function ,second need after that I dont really care |

It was toyed around with a long long time ago (on the old Lost Board, long time ago) by someone but I can't remember who (hard enough remembering what I did yesterday much less a couple of years ago... Now of course the solution is to get a Rock Lizzard rear bumper and fab something up to that... |

Phxtoad made a mount system that inserts into the rear hitch with the cans located on either side of the spare:
He has an image of the plans on his cardomain site, and I'm sure he'd be willing to give anyone interested some more information. |
