Post subject:  Brake Pad wear/replacemnt
Does anybody have information about the replcement, and/or wear distances of the brake pads on an '04 Liberty? My liberty. Has about 48,000 miles, the last 3500 of which it has been driven quite hard. I do not know if it is on its first or second set of pads, my mom drove it for the first 45000 miles. I can look it up. Anyway, the padshave been squealing, easecually when cold, for quite a long time and now I am starting to notice decreased braking performance, which is scary. It can stop, but the pedal seems to go down further, easier than usual and I have to brake harder an harder to match the braking force that I am used to. I'm hoping that the deteriorating pedal feel is related to worn brake pads? Any info, even agreeance, would be appreciated.

Has anybody repaces their own pads? Us it easy like it should be? Do rotors typically have to be replaced with pads? (i know I should inspect them when I am replacing pads). Hiw are the calipers formatted? (do you have to beed brakes after/is it hard? Thanks.

Note: I have a liberty with 4-wheel disc brakes (early ones didn't?), and ABS (if it makes a difference, it shouldn't). I am pretty mechanically capable, and have done brake jobs on my dad's chevy pickup, among a few other vechicles, but am unfamiliar with the Libby's setup. Any info before it get it on jack stands(long weekend in 4days) would be appreciated. Once again, thanks.

helo i changed 1st pads at 60,000 and will be changing the disc for the 1 st time at 207,000 mile normally i had to do all 4 at the same time . at 60,000 i changed the fronts then 3 week s later the rears went out

dang drew! Thats some major miles youve got built up there.

OT: Ever had any problems? How many miles has the lift been on it?

Getting the rotors resurfaced it alawys a good idea when getting new pads. When they resurfaced them they should tell you weather or not the rotors are to thin to resurface. Then you will need to get new ones.

Seems like alot of people like the Napa brand rotors.

thanks for the info... Especially mileages.

(warning... I ramble and get O/T here) Seems like I'm about 10,000 miles early. I know that longevity
will be affected by driving style, bit this seems too early (for the short period of time I've been driving it, admittedly too fast, I shouldn't have decreased pad life 18%).

I'd actually forgotten about resurfacing until after i posted, all vechicles i have done brakes on recently (chevy 2500hd truck and four-wheelers) wear completley through rotors in the life of one to two sets of pads.(the truck's brakes are too big for most shops to grind anyway)

Anyway, I'm suprised the rotors (and even the libby) lasted 200,000+ miles. (how does it run?)

I was planning to do all 4 at the same time; did you do any of the pad changes yourself? Obviously you can't grind rotors yourself, but are there any complications in the procedure?[/i]

My brakes were done with OEM parts at 50k miles...I just replaced the front rotors/pads with Raybestos rotors and Hawk pads and readjusted the rear drums at about 100k. I'm rough on brakes, and I'm impressed with how the KJ has been...course then, I don't drive it like I drive my cars that are a lot lower to the ground

Also, I wouldn't bother resurfacing the rotors...rotors are SO CHEAP for the KJ that it just doesn't make sense not to start fresh

96550 miles and still stock pads/rotors, they will go 100,000 maybe 110,000 easy. and no I dont drive slow! :wink: I also have pulled a 6X12 cargo trailer for maybe 12000 or more of that.
I keep trying to figure out how you all drive, are you the ones with your brake lights on all the way down the interstate? :lol: :lol: :lol:

I have done lengthy and in depth research as to brake pads and rotors. To my surprise "NAPA, Checkers, Autozone, PEP Boys, Advanced Auto Parts. All these suppliers of aftermarket parts and supplies. It turns out there brake pads that have their best warranty are actually the pads supplied by "Satisfied Brakes" Only after seeing the test where they take a torch to them heat them up then slam them with the BFH {Big Hammer}. where other pads fall apart with this abuse the Satified Brakes like the ENERGISER BUNNY keep going and going.
Unless your driveing proffessionally or in real competition slotted rotors are a waste of money on a Jeep. ( We arn't Indi, We arn't Nascar, We arn't proffessional racers) It's a Jeep built to get dirty and have fun getting dirty with. So please don't reinforce the Rep of Mall Crawler or the Soccer Mom Commando-Mobile :twisted: Yes it is much more Luxurious then the Wrangler, more Civalized and less utalitarian. But it's still a Jeep an as such show pride in our SLEEPER MOMMY 4-Wheeler :P :twisted: :shock: 8) :mrgreen:

I like Napa rotors and the stock mopar pads now. Before I was a big advocate of ceramic pads but for the extra money it just doesn't seem worth it any more. It's also nice to know that my pads won't cook the rotors so fast either.

Hey theBIGbCraig, sounds like your in Canada with the 'Family Day' long weekend comming up. I have 147,000 Km's on my 2003 still with the origional brake components and all is still good. Do some towing to.

Better to have those reliable drums than squeaky disk's. Especially since the parking brake actually works!
