LOST JEEPS :: View topic - bumper winch combo?

I am ordering this bumper with the stinger.....
I'm trying to decide on a Hitch Receiver or a Mounted winch version...

What would be more practicle?
A portable winch that I could use in the front and rear receiver.....
Or a mounted winch..

What would you do?

I'm leaning toward the Mounted, but the hitch may come in handy for hauling wood and things

Jason, take the winch from the back cargo area and toss the winch on the rear hitch and pull yourself rearwards out of the stuck.

By the time you add a front bumper, is this going to be too much weight for the KJ?

Id go with a hitch mount, you can use it front and rear and you wont have the extra weight when your just driving on the roads

Just keep it on it i currently hav a front hitch and winch and cant wait to use it it was expensive to run power to the rear and i never use it the one time i could have the rear hitch was a foot under muck

Just remember that using a hitch mounted winch that most instances you can't use the rated pull of the winch due to the lower rating of the hitch(and hitch pin).It's better to use a bumber mount winch,plus the winch will always be there when needed,not those times rolling down the road and need it and not have it with you.That's why I like my ARB,winch is always with me and virtually impossible to steal without major part removal. Just my 2 cents and opinion.

Hey chris, I have not yet got that going, I am in the process of it though so yes it is still an option. I am hopping to get it done with the batch of bumpers I am working on right now so that I can get some pics of what it will look like.

Mounted vs. portable - Think about this: Winches weigh in the vicinity of 80 - 100 lbs. If you're alone, trying to line up an 80+ lb. winch into a 2 inch receiver wouldn't be much fun. (I've put some thought into this, since I've been debating the same thing myself). A winch, in the back of the Libby, would take up space. Something we don't have LOT of, behind the rear seat. So, myself, I'm thinking about getting it permanently mounted. Of course, if you've got arms like Popeye, or are built like a pro-wrestler, you won't have any issues with lifting. But then again, if you're that big, you'd probably need to get a Surburban to fit into anyway...........

front mounted all the time, I only know of one time that I saw a need for a rear mount and then it would of been impossible to get to the hitch to even install it, good idea in one way but , not really practical IMO

If it's the latter, mount the winch and fab a carrier that mounts onto the 2 front tow pins where the shackles go. Then you could use the winch rope to hold the carrier while full of wood and when not full the carrier would rotate up on the pins and be out of the way. Or am I in LALA land on this one.....

A winch with synthetic rope will weight around 55#s or so. The big advantage is not "having" to carry it around all the time. With a "snatch block" you can winch from many position with some natural anchor with a mounted winch. So advantages to both...

IMO dont waste the time or money on a hitch mounted winch when you need it 99% of the time you will not be able to get it in the hitch also if you go with a friend which you should do then they can pull out faster than a winch and if neither of you can make a hill then you probably should not be on that trail and you can not wheel any trails with the winch in the hitch or at least none that I have ever wheeled this was taken on the easiest trail we wheel there is NO WAY you could take either of these hills with a winch in the hitch and if you needed to put it in that would also not happen and I hate to think what would happen if it came loose in the back of the Jeep on one of these hills note that the bumper is in the mud note the bumper scraped ground on the way up

Can't do that with a front mounted winch and you must go backwards (i.e. dropped into a major mud hole or deep water and your winch is underwater/buried deep in the stuff.
