Post subject:  An Idea For Lights On The Basket
If I ever get the beast made it will be 880 WATTS! I don't have the details worked out yet but it is very doable. There will be 2 rows of lights. Each row will have 8 55 watt lights in it. I was thinking the top row should be driving lights and the bottom row fogs. Or all driving lights. What do you think?

EDIT: the lights will be the 3"X5" ones.

Are you lighting up the run way down there or what???
If you are doing that many why not mix some long range lights and driving lights, fogs are really for mounting down low and dont do much at all when up above 24/32 inches at most, just my thoughts

I was thinking that they would light up the sides of the trails. Up high the light would spread out faster and further. Maybe not though. I don't know, haven't checked, if there is a 3X5 long distance light. If so that would be great.

I tried fogs one time on a roll bar even with 100 watt bulbs the light just kind of went out a way and disappeared ??? they were 3x5 KCs...but driving lights and long range work I have mixed them before, had 5x7 driving and 6X9 long range, could spot a deer a long ways off! So I wouldn't hit it of course, not hunting them :oops:

Just get a couple of these and call it good.... 250 watt LED spotlights (only draw 1.8 amps 8) )

But well worth that price,100,000hour "bulb" life and draws about a 1/10th the amps a 100watt H3 bulb does.

This looks Like the same type of setup that I used to build my bike lite. I use 2 3watt led's at 1/2 amp this produces about 180 lumens .
a 20 watt halogen bulb is about 200 lumens . I paid $6.95 for each led and about $12 for a boosting regulator. My point is that it might be a feasable lighting project for our jeeps. These Leds need heatsinking on my bike lite iuse the Maglite housing as the heat sink. Banks of three leds in series with a dropping resistor
could be paralleled for one bright lite. The comercial bike headlites run from $150-$300 for what I have about $35 invested. Will post a photo when I find it.

The problem with using LED clusters like that without a lens is that there is no focus, the light spreads out and gives you more of a "glow" than anything that would be usable at a distance.

If you want to do LED lighting you'd be far better off using Luxeon K2 LEDs with a reflector and a projector type lens, or a collimating lens. The K2 can put out up to 200 Lumens at 1A and is the brightest LED I know of. For comparison's sake the 4D LED Maglites are 3W and put out approx. 120 lumens. Look one of those in the eye and you'll be seeing spots for hours. Do some Googling, there's lots of info out there about DIY LED lamps.

It's gonna take a bit of math and engineering know-how to make it work, and in the end will probably cost you quite a bit while giving less than stellar performance. However, if you want to give it a try I say more power to you! It's always nice to see someone being creative. :)

LED lights 3 inches tall 4 inches deep, available in lenghts from 6 to 42 inches, a 12 inch light bar produces 3600 lumens, 100 more than a 35 watt HID while only drawing 4 amps

Thanks Tom! I have 40" figured in my drawing, but I guess 42" would work! What I'm looking at is the effect that lights have up there on the basket. I really don't care if I can blind somebody a mile away. It would just LOOK awesome! Besides, on most trails you would need the light to go only so far because of bends and changes in elevations. So I think LED's would probably work just fine.

One interesting thing: after all the joking about this idea people are starting to think! Thinking about a problem/situation is what brings about needed changes.
