In a little more than 2 weeks i will be in moab utah for my very first time. as excited as i am, making the 5 hour trek with limited music entertainment had me a little worried. with the stock RBK head unit, i cant bring my iPOD along without an FM modualtor, Id have to make countless CD's to fit my 8 some 15 minute long techno/house music mixes because the OEM headunit isnt MP3 compatible. a new head unit was in order. just in time for the some 6 hour trip, a kenwood kdc-x491! its MP3 compatible and is HD radio ready, SAT radio ready, bluetooth ready, cd changer ready, and features a usb interface for direct control of ipods and usb memory drives. theres no way this trip, or any other trip, will be boring!

now all that needs to be done on the KJ is the 12,000 mile service interval before i hit the road, and if it passes the visual inspections, ill be good to go!

I have an Itrip for my Ipod. It runs off of the Ipod's battery so it's only good for about 4 hours on a full charge, if that. I'd recommend a direct connection that gives cleaner sound and won't run the battery down if you're going to use it for more than short trips.

The black bexel on your dash, Mine is brushed alumium, I like the blac, Is that stock or an aftermarket bezel for the stereo fittment?

Is the console bezel black too? door accents?

I think the black looks cool.

I'll trade with ya for those. I'm kinda strapped so can't make the trip down that way anytime real soon, though.

LOL the lock plungers on my Sport are faux brushed aluminum

I'd trade you, but I like the black.

KJ4ME, that's a sweet head unit. my 4800 is a couple years old, I was thinking about an upgrade. Will that USB port work with a flash drive?

oh...and I feel your pain about long drives with limited music. I've got about 15 mp3-encoded CD's burned and XM for that reason 8)

yes absolutely! the only thing is that the manual states that you need to use a usb extender and not put the flash drive directly into the slot on the unit. not sure why but yea it will work. there is also a 3.5mm aux in jack on the back of the unit so even if you have just the ipod shuffle or other small device, it can still be played. and this is not iPOD exclusicve, it will play zunes, ZENs, JukeBox's and more, it will treat them as flash drives, so the names of the folders dont show up on the screen, itll just be FLDR:1, FLDR:2 and so on, instead of FLDR:My Favorites

I have a 30Gb Zune. Wish there was a universal connector for all MP3 players so iPod didn't have exclusives to receivers.

Another one of my bright ideas.....

Make universal adapters Zune to iPod cable. Zen to iPod cable, etc...

I'll PM you the next time I'm heading down that way and we can hash out all the details. They aren't exactly clean at the moment but it's about time for spring cleaning. There may be some minor scratches around the shifter bezel, as well. I'll get some pics when I get it all cleaned up.
