I am probably going to do this to the stock wheels soon. A couple of questions...

1) I have heard of people using the Rustoleum hammered paint with good results...any others worked well?

2) How has it held up?

3) What did you do to prep the wheel?

4) Any recommendations?

i used a high temp engine enamel and it turned out really well. for prep i would make sure to sand them really well and use a good primer. mine have held up well but i plan to re do them with a gloss black instead of the simi gloss i use. they also have a few scratches from rocks but that couldnt be avoided really since i like to wheel on rocks  good luck and be sure to post some pics when you get them done!!

You should paint them canary yellow to match the skids.

PM SnowSport he used some paint from Eastwood company. Look first into some water wash paint and varnish remover. Apply liberrally scrub with steal wool then rinse completely allow to dry and then use a scotch bright pad. I recomend epoxy paint Rustoleum makes some, and they have a epoxy clear coat. What ever drying time give it as much as possible let it get it's full cure, then remount.
Best of luck 8)

I like the Eastwood stuff. First I stripped the rims down to bare metal, sanded them with wet/dry abrasive cloth, then used a painting prep cleaner. Then the black self-etching primer and finally the satin black top coats.

No clear coats over top, and we'll see how it goes this summer. Hopefully the top coats will be enough.

The rims have been in the shed ever since though, because they're mounted with my summer tires (Grabbers). Right now I have black steelies on the KJ with studded snow tires. Those are going to be coming off soon cause it's spring! Well, the calendar says it is, anyhow.

I can hardly wait to get my summer tires back on.....

I couldn't resist mounting the rims just for this poser shot before they went into the shed..... :)

I'm considering the same mod only masking off the raised section of the rims and the outter portion. Then apply something in maybe metal flake or just leave in aluminum. Then after the first coat of Clear while still wet apply some sign grade glass bead to add a reflective quality only seen at night. Finally over coat many times with more clear epoxy. :D  8)

I sanded mine then primered. Painted the whole thing black then sanded the lip to the metal then clear coated. In hind sight I would have just masked off the lip. Sanding had to be done really carefully to not scratch the paint that was supposed to be there.

Gotta say those are some mighty pretty wheels, just what I had in mind except the ridges on each spoke would be paintless also. 8)

If you mean the back of the rim, yes it is visible between the spokes. But the inside of the rim that is covered by the tire, I just painted to provide a continuous seal for the metal. Probably overkill, but I was in spray mode and just decided to keep painting. :)

I only gave the insides three coats though, and the fronts got 6 coats.

The clear coat on mine is shot. Would it be a good idea to just sand blast the whole thing, prior to painting them? Or should I just sand them down?

I'm thinking of painting my stock steel wheels, and was also thinking the easiest thing to do would be to sand blast them. I have the capability to do so in my driveway... would that be sufficient prep?

Certainly, are you dry sand blasting or wet sand blasting. Check you area and see if you have an Industrial Rustoleum Distributer, they have a great 2 part Epoxy paint, used for Cement Mixing trucks and such. They also have a clear coat Epoxy also. :D

Dry... nothing fancy, I picked up a Coleman Sandblasting kit, discontinued at Walmart, like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Powermate ... B000SZY9AO

and I have a compressor of course.

I will check out that rustoleum stuff, sounds interesting!

Perhaps I will practice on my trailer wheels first :)

Thanks!

Dave

Thats truly an amazing rim there neatus. Not to sure why Jeep cannot do something so simple to a rim they already put on a Jeep. Looks 100% awesome.

Those rims on a black lifted liberty, smoked tails and smoked clear park lights, what a B-E-A-U-tiful rig that would be. 8)
