| Post subject: | Loud hammer like noise |
Hi, I am new to L.O.S.T. but need your help. Last year I Bought a 3.7 auto. Now 10 K miles After driving 4Hi or 4LO and driving normally, a strong noise is produced under the driver side, mainly when asking for some traction as going up hill. The noise is loud and looks as something is braking down there. Is just as a hammer hiting the car body just under your feets. Something is going wrong? Thanks in advance |

Blown CV possibly. Does it go faster or slower depending on your speed? |

Sound is not related with speed. It sounds only once each time. Is like something coming apart. A strong CLICK which you can feel, really feel, and hear. I am not sure, but looks to happen when one wheel slips a litlle. Is like chain jumping. |

The transfer case is under the drivers area. What model transfer case do you have, Command Trac or Selec Trac? |

Are you doing this on dry pavement or off-road? Dry pavement will cause all sorts of sounds if you switch to 4WD and should not be used. |

I use traction off road, but noise comes once returned to 2H. Once I had a Daihatsu for which you must run some meters back as to really disconect traction. Does the same apply with KJs? |

No, the KJ does not have locking hubs, they are always engaged. However, if you try to turn right after switching from 4wd to 2hi the t-case may not have disengaged yet and it may be binding. Does it feel "tight" right before it pops? |

Yes, it is tight before the -big bang-. From what I understand to take care to drive straight for a while after changing from 4WD to 2WD. |

From what I understand to take care to drive straight for a while after changing from 4WD to 2WD. Yeah, that's your problem. Try to give it about 10 yards or so in a straight line after shifting out of 4 wheel drive. It also helps if you let off the gas for a second. The NV242 has springs inside that do the actual shifting and if there is torque on the gears they don't get a chance to release. |

hmmm - I wonder if this is what I heard? Last week I was driving to work, straight line, 2DW, 50mpg and I coulda SWORE I blew a tire or a small animal had just run under the Libby! I pulled over - did a walk around and saw nothing. I only had another mile to go to work so I hopped back in and when I parked I got on my hands and knees certain I would see blood n guts under there - nothin...my hubby put it up on jacks that night and found nothing. We kicked a few things around -- and wondered if it might have been gun shot I heard cuz I was driving through a heavily hunted area and it's muzzle loader season up here...but now that I'm reading this I'm wondering... Thing is - we did put her in 4WD the night before for like the 2 time only - just to test it out. But then we went to WallyWorld and back...so I would have thought it would have done it then, not the next morning...now we'll have to do some 4WD tests and see if we can recreate it so we can get it fixed. Can it be "fixed"? Thanks! Sue |

nope, there is nothing to be fixed, its doing what it has been designed to do. I do not think that was ur noise thought, mine will pop out usually within 10 feet, if u take it out of 4wd put it into drive in a stright line and give it some gas, let off the gas and pop it into N while ur still moving, this always takes mine out, i hear it "pop". |
