Haynes or Chilton manual?

Does anyone have a preference. I need to buy one and just wondered what people like or dislike about them.

They are both very similar. Chilton is published by Haynes. I have a Chilton and the factory service manual.

Chilton is a more exhaustive manual, if I remember correctly. Haynes manuals are around $15, and Chiltons are a lot more. If you can find a PDF copy of the factory service manual, that's a nice manual, too.

I purchased the factory manual used. Factory manuals are the best, they are model year specific and have outstanding pictures, charts, and testing procedures. Haynes, Clymer, and Chilton do not compare IMO. They can be quite vague when covering complex assemblies and especially electronics. If I had to have an aftermarket book it would be the Chilton, but only if I couldn't get the Factory book.

I got my factory manual from the factory, back in '02, and I paid over $100.

Yeah I got the book on ebay. I think I paid around $20 for it. Not even greasy!

wow $20???? Thats a steal!!!

They usually retail about $100 from Chrysler Publications, but VERY well worth it. I have the PC version.

Factory on CD is the way to go. Print the pages you want, write on them, get them greasy as hell and throw them away when you're done!

Yeah.. I got the Chilton manual for my 95 YJ and it was ok.. I ended up getting the FSM.. When I got my 06 Libby.. I called to get the FSM for it and DC wanted $325 for it.. I said forget it... I will see if the price comes down after the 07's come out..

You can find any of the manuals you have talked about in this thread on Ebay. Factory service manuals are going for between $20-$60. Sometimes people will sell you a down load of the manual on PDF for about $6-$12 bucks (usually it is illegal for them to sell it like this because they are just duplicating material). Haynes and Chiltons can be found as well.

Skip the chilton, their directions seem vague. I once had to replace a CV on my old Buick Lesabre and they described it in 9 steps. The Haynes described it in 21 and had better/more pictures.
