Made a discovery today that will make everyone life a little easier. The Jeep steering wheel harness uses the same connector as the EVIC. This means if you bought a EVIC off of ebay for $30 you could buy the harness just for the pigtail connector. Or you can grab any steering wheel harness at the junkyard and use it. Here we have 2 EVIc connectors removed from grand cherokee's:
Here we have two steering wheel harnesses, the connector on the left is a steering wheel harness WITHOUT radio buttons, so it would require that you find 2 steering wheel harnesses without radio buttons and remove the wiring from one and install into the other to make 1 EVIC connector. On the right is a steering wheel harness with the radio buttons, as you can see it has enough pins that you can use it and just take note of the different color coded wires.
Foreground, 99 WJ steering wheel harness with radio buttons, background, 99 WJ harness with radio buttons and radio wires removed.
And as you can see the steering wheel harness plugs right into the EVIC:
Happy junkyard hunting all! |

Sweet find. I always wonder if jeep plans stuff like that out. I guess in this situation it was cheaper but I often wonder about other things. Kinda like the holes in the top of the spring mounts on the rear end. They just happened to be perfect for running air lines into air bags. |

Most likely its cost cutting. the other thing I found was the AC controls use the same plug as the overhead consoles in the XJs and Durango's. Im sure other plugs are shared that you would never even think of. |

Found another source for the connector, pulled some plugs out of something like a 00 caravan, one of the plugs for the caravan overhead console had the same plug as the KJ EVIC connector. So there you go, another source for the connector! |
