So anyone done this? What with petrol the way it is I'm wondering if it's worth looking into. + the Australian government will give out a rebate, & I think it's around $2000. My concern would be if there was a loss of power due to running gas, also do you still need to run petrol or can you convert fully over? |

Liquified petroleum gas. Usually propane and/or butane. |

You'd probably have to give up some cargo space. I remember almost all the city vehicles in my home town were converted to propane. I know it's been in use for some time now but has never seemed to catch on. I've wondered why lately though. American Alternative Fuels sales a conversion kit. They seem to be one of the few that do for FI vehicles. I'd be interested to hear from someone that has experience with LPG in any vehicle. Was it worth it, how's the vehicle run? I've actually heard that you get better performance from it than you do with gas. |

Back in 1990 I visited some family there in Australia in Adelade actually and my one uncle...who, no offense is a total hippy, converted his van into LPG and it ran pretty darn nice. I know he said it was a little on the pricey side but I could never get eny more info out of him. Here in the States I have wondered if it is a valid option. I think it would be kinda cool to go wheeling in one, lol. |

I had a Golf GTI on LPG once and to be honest I would not buy a LPG fueled car again. Performance is down about 10% (had it tested on a rolling road) and fuel consumption is up about 30% and the only way that it is cheaper than petrol is when it is cheap to buy and road tax is low. Main problem with LPG is that the regulators get faulty quite often and you end up driving on petrol again and the other problem is a limited booth space and not many petrol stations sell the stuff. The main problem most engines are not build to drive on LPG and the result will always be a compromise. My advice, buy a diesel, you get 40% more power and 40% less fuel consumption and they last for ever. |

Yes LPG is cheap, about 1/3 the cost of petrol over here. I belive that you use more LPG per mile to petrol but the cost would be where you make the saving. However what Dutchy has said makes me think it's not worth it. If I was to do it I'd be wanting to remove the fuel tank and put it under the back, we don't have enough room in the back of the KJ as it is let alone putting a bloody LPG tank in there. Most if not all of our taxies run on LPG so there must be some pro's. I will look into it a little more but I'd say it will be a no for me. |

Hi CD, There is an option of having the LPG tank underneath combined with a smaller petrol tank, you can't get rid of the petrol tank altogether as most systems need petrol to start up. Try these links to find out more, if you need more info just google for LPG on UK and Dutch sites as these countries (especially Holland) have the most experience with LPG. Chrysler is selling new cars like the 300c with LPG conversion at the dealers in Holland. http://www.jeepspares.com/tech.html http://www.gaspoweruk.co.uk/Jeep.htm http://www.arunautogas.co.uk/autogas_lpg_conversion.htm http://www.ptautogas.co.uk/ http://www.gastech.org.uk/ |
