At just over 12k miles, I now have my first check engine light. At least, I assume that's what it is, it's an orange indicator that shows some kind of strange shape that I suppose could be an engine. The on-off-on-off-on-off-on trick shows a code of P0038 (I think it was 38, I remember it being in the high 30s, I looked it up, didn't see anything obvious).

Anyway, I brought her into the dealership last night, they are looking at her today. Till then I'm driving around in a rental 2005 Cherokee Laredo (2wd auto, ugh), courtesy of the extended warranty.

Time for the actual question. Am I right in thinking that no matter what it is, it should be covered under warranty, since it only has 12k? In a related question, am I right in thinking that if it is covered, I pay nothing? or is there some kind of deductable I have to pay for service?

(ps - pretty certain it's not the gas cap. I did go to a full-service place recently that didn't even give it one click, but I've filled up since then, and the light has been on for the last 5 days or so)

UPDATE: just got the callback, it was the O2 sensor. They said one of the wires was damaged and rubbing on the driveshaft, covered under warranty. Still not sure if I need to pay a deductable, I'll find out when I pick it up.

You shouldnt have to pay for a thing. All under warranty. Ive actually checked that wire to make sure its not hitting anything. Some of them are in very bad places.

Since you still got 12K on a 2005KJ it most definately is a warranty repair, which means NO cost to you. Sounds like the dealer (so far) is being really cool about it. Consider yourself lucky!

Hey Jeff,
Long time noe see. I think you should be fine with the warranty issue. It shouldn't cost you a penny.

BTW, do you realize your site is down?

yup, in and out the door without spending a cent, it was a very enjoyable experience overall.

Yeah, I know it's down - I just moved into a new place and I'm still working on getting the routing back up again. I've been way too busy in the last week or two between moving in and other things. I should have it up again, soon, though (probably by the end of the week if all goes well).

Can you pin-point the location of that wire for us? I would like to see if I can prevent that from happening to mine. Thanks!

Christopher

To tell you the truth, I have no idea where it is - I didn't have any time this week to investigate the problem, apart from noting that the Check Engine light was on and finding the trouble code. The information about the oxy sensor was just what the technician told me over the phone when he said my jeep was ready to pick up - I didn't bother to look into it any further, since it was fixed and free.

If I have time (which I likely won't for another week or so) I can take a look in the FSM (Factory Service Manual, not Flying Spaghetti Monster) to see if it mentions where the sensor is.
