Stock Battery finally died today. Well I mean it started (nearly dead) and allowed me to get to work. Then I tried to restart the KJ in the parking lot here at the office and nothing. This is the best vehicle known to man! Even with a dead battery, there is at least a warning of trouble ahead and the thing took me to work so I wouldn't be late. I'm officially impressed now.

Now, I need to search up the millions of threads on Optima's and call around for a replacement.

Stock battery: February 2002 - June 2008... I know I was pushing my luck.

I don't know about how others feel, but I just picked up Duralast Gold Top battery. It has 1000 CA, and 800 CCA equivilant to the Optima Yellow Top. It will have plenty of power to run accessories. Plus it comes with a 96 month warranty too (Free replacement up to 36).

Best of all it was only $86 after the core return. Worth it to me even though I can't flip it upside down...

Nice job by the way getting your stocker to last that long, mine was starting to push 5 years.

i gotta question about battery terminals...
when my current battery dies (hope its sometime soon, but i doubt it) and i get my new one, can someone show me the proper way to hook up to the + terminal so there is none of that nasty, corrosive, white, chalky stuff!?!?!

Thanks to all!

My old battery had some of those donut-shaped pads that go under the terminals and when I dropped my new battery in I put on some new ones, and this is what they look like after 5+ years of use - I've never even had to do any cleaning on them:

yes, and my g/f's dad has that terminal cleaner from autoparts stores and we cleaned it with the brush and put on the black stuff, and it still corrodes

Maybe your battery is venting gas into the air and it's reacting with the negative terminal on the Jeep.

A few years back I took my KJ into the dealership for a checkup and had them clean that crud off my stock battery. They ended up spraying some red substance on the negative terminal and I never had the problem again. The big thing to look at is the actual cable terminal. You don't want the acid on that to eat through the metal. It makes replacing the battery more challenging.
