Post subject:  Oil Change Question

I just changed my oil for the 2nd time in my life.

When I started it up it made a nasty noise for about 2 seconds before returning to normal. (maybe the noise a vehicle makes with no oil in it)

Is is supposed to do that? It didn't do it last time, so I was just wondering if I did something wrong since I'm still a rookie.

To me, that noise says to change the oil sooner or use a better/heavier oil.

Well for starters you did run "without" oil for about 2 seconds, the time it took for your oil pump to fill the oil filter and then send the oil to were it is supposed to go.You can "pre-fill" your oil filter before putting it on but that can be messy and with our small oil filters it's not really needed and is okay to not "pre-fill" the filters. The engine temp will effect how bad it sounds so it did the same thing the first time you changed the oil just it wasn't as loud, cold engine will make more noise then a hot engine will.

Did you fill the oil filter with oil before installing it.

No. I didn't fill the filter with oil first....
just put some on the gasket.
That must be why it made the noise.
I didn't have that step in my instructions.

I used 5W-20 Full Synthetic Valvoline.
Only cost 99 cents per quart.

I just drove around. Seems normal, so hopefully I didn't hurt it.

Just curious as to why some use 5-30 over 5-20? Does the higher viscosity protect or prevent wear over a lower viscosity oil?

5w20 is the specified oil for the later model engines. It is specified due to the auto mfg's trying to Up their across-the-board CAFE fuel consumption numbers. You can run whatever weight oil you like.

I personally don't see any problem running a good quality Full synthetic 5w20 or even 0w30 in the engine since the quoted weight is not the be-all/end-all of the oils properties.

I run 5w30 in my 2 KJ's and my Scion, my XJ gets 10w30.

Just about every vehicle will make a noise when you start it up after an oil change. I don't think that was anything to worry about, especially if the noise goes away after a couple seconds. Longer than 5 seconds and then you might want to make sure you put the drain plug back in before pouring the new oil in.

You and me both. Just keep the oil changes fresh and the filter clean... The engine should be OK after that (at least, until the valve spring cracks)
