Vehicle Maintenance

I was wondering, for those of you that are leasing the KJ, do you take the jeep into the dealership for oil changes and other maintenance? Or do you do it yourself.
Just curious cause my dealership is telling me that they have to do all maintenance, including oil changes.
My KJ's @ 12,000kms. The first oil change was done by the dealership(it was free) and I just did a second @ 10,200 using synthetic. Can I not just keep a log complete with receipts???

The dealer can not insist on doing your services unless they are providing them free of charge (or it was spelled out in your lease, but then how do they enforce that?). They can't dictate what you use or where you go for work. Are you planning on keeping the Jeep after the lease? If not, why even bother w/ Syn?

Force of habit. I've used syn for all my vehicles. This is my first lease.
I also purchase several jugs of syn when its on sale so its basically the same price as reg.

Just to add: Keep good records if you don't go to the dealer (with a lease.) When it is time to turn the vehicle in, you will have a much easier time of fighting random fees with proper records for all service performed.

not sure about canadian law, but down here, there's a law on the books that says the dealer can't require they service. check with your local regulating agency for a clear answer.

I have always kept a folder of all the reciepts from maintanence on all of my vehicals. That way I can prove the work was done by someone, for poss warranty issues down the road.

Sometimes the dealer requires all sorts of preventative maintance to maintain the factory warranty, this way I have it all in writing to prove it was done. :idea:

Dealer has never done anything to my jeep.

I keep all receipts from everything I buy and write down the date, mileage, and what was done.

I was also going through the jeep supplier maintenance schedule booklet and it says to inspect this and check that every 5,000 km's or so....e.g. brakes lines, steering componenets. How do you log this. I've been under the hood a bit and I've never notice any thing to cause concern.
Also the schedule indicates a oil change every 5,000km's. A bit excessive???

Synthetic will do 5000 miles standing on its head. 8000 is doable.
Of course it all depends on driving conditions, short or long trips, blah,blah,blah.
BUT, with that being said, I use synthetic (penzoil platinum-fantastic used oil analysis results-check out bobistheoilguy.com) and I change out between 3 and 5000. I guess we just can't help ourselves.....we love our jeeps, and we love the smell, feel, and even taste of oil!!!! :lol:

It's best to keep the oil fresh in my mind... My Liberty chews up oil before the 3000 mile mark (3000miles is like 4830km's) Maybe I'm just hard on it, but I run synthetic in it all the time and every 3000 miles it comes out pretty dead.

For the inspection part, just keep an inspection log in your vehicle or on a computer. You can buy a small binder or record book and keep it in the pocket on the seat. Pull it out, mark your mileage and date and then put it back in. These things really come in handy when you try to remember the last time you switched fluids in one of the lesser parts of the vehicle.

Have you done a used oil analysis to confirm that the oil is being "chewed up"? A lot of times dirty looking oil just means that it is doing its job and keeping the engine clean. I seriously doubt a good synthetic oil will be exhausted at 3000. Back me up JJ.
