So, the KJ has come up with a new clever problem to elude me with.

While in traffic, red light, etc, the temp gauge rockets up after about 5 seconds, goes up to 3/4 and would keep going if i let it.
The ac also starts blowing hot air the second i lay off the gas to start braking.

I've checked my coolant levels, plugged into an OBD2 reader and so far i've got nothing.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thermostat? Couldn't hurt to change your antifreeze. Just some ideas.

The only other thing I can think of is lack of air flow. Is your electric fan working? Have you checked to see if part of your radiator is plugged?

checked the rad, all is well there.

I'm thinking it could be the elec. fan, i drove the car for about an hour today (not mine, its my dads) and didnt notice the electric fan switching on which i used to notice. I'll look into that.

You need to check, your thermostat, electric fan, and an old trick but it usually gives you an indication on what is going on in the readiator. After you go thru your oveheating stage SHUT OFF the engine. Do what you can to feel the rediator, it maybe a bit tough sticking your hand between the fan and shroud but it is doable..Again make sure the Engine is NOT Running!! If you feel Hot and Cold spots on the Radiator itself your radiator may have some areas that are blocked. If this is the case flushing may work, but if the radiator is blocked you may be better off in replacing it. One major cause of this is incorrect coolant, or coolant that has aged, or bad circulation from the start. Hope it helps.

If the A/C is on then the fan should be on, if its not something is wrong with it.

Most likely the fan not coming on,check the fan relay(10" below the battery, see pic below, circled in yellow) and the fan itself. The new style fan relay has a oversized heatsink on it since they tend to fry from to much heat.It also could be your waterpump impeller is worn and not circulating to coolant properly.

If its a fan or bad relay it wont. Im not sure what temp it needs to be to give a chime and a check engine light though.
