my guess is it just registers numbers etched in key parts so if it stolen harder to fence parts. They tried to sell something like that when I bought my 05 as a anti theft deterent

I have 2 tracking codes on my 05 build sheet.

Under "standard equipment" I have ........594s - vehicle order tracking. I took that to mean for the factory/dealer tracking the vehicle while in transit from the factory, to dealer and where it is on the dealer lot for inventory.

Under "optional equipment" I have the same code as you. The 4vl... In system vehicle locate tracking........I took this to mean for the serius radio that is in mine. But I have an EVIC so the only other thing I can think of is for the vehicle direction (north - south - east - west) that displays with the temperature on the EVIC. (Something has to know which way you are going to give you the readout).

Either that, or "big brother" is watching you and me.......in which case we could start driveing around in circles and get them dizzy.........haha

But if someone really wanted to track you then I am guessing an ONSTAR or LOJAC type system would be much better.
