Does anyone have any recommendations? I found this one http://www.quadratec.com/products/92034_11_07.htm but was hoping to spend a little less. I only need to carry two bikes. |

yeah Im sure ebay or fleabay as ive seen it called here will have some. Especially with people getting rid of the suv's they dont need hitch mount bike racks anymore. Mine is a Rhode Gear, I dont think they make it anymore. |

Never say never. I have two bikes and a four bike carrier. I found that it came in handy when three of my friends wanted to go biking up in the Rockies. Instead of wasting gas for two vehicles, we all climbed into my Jeep and loaded our four bikes on my rack and away we went. Definitely came in handy. Only problem, with a hitch rack is not being able to open the rear gate door all the way, due to the rack, so we could easily get our gear out of the back. Mine drops down but it still has a metal piece that is in the way. If we had a swing up door, then it wouldn't be a problem. |

My buddy had an XJ that he had a 4 carrier Yakima or Thule rack on the back of and he made it so he could carry bikes on it and then swap out the top piece and he could carry a spare tire on it. Not sure exactly how he did it, but he welded on a spare tire mount to it somehow and he was set. He kept the tire on it most of the time but when he needed to carry his bike or more then he switched it back and carried the tire on top or left it off. It worked great and he regrets selling it with his old XJ when he bought his new XJ. |

I appreciate all of the input but all of the ones that have been posted here (save for the used rack) don't appear to be designed to clear rear mounted spare tires (except for the spare tire mount, which I'm not looking for). |

I use the performance 4 bike rack. I paid a bit over 100 for it and it clears the stock tire easily and will clear a larger tire if you extend the bottom out all the way. |

I have a Swag 3-biker and love it. It tilts so you can get in the back of your rig and you can remove the top part if you want. |

I got the hitch extender first but I have never used it. I bought a used Thule full Swing 4. It swings away so you can open the rear gate (the fold down won't work with a KJ in terms of being able to open the gate.) I ended up bring it to a welder who extended the receiver portion about 4" and then we added a slight angle to it so I wouldn't jam my legs when walking around the jeep. I also had him add a bolt welded on to keep the rack closed. The stock set up just has a spring loaded pin that rattled way too much. If you're just taking the jeep to drive to some trails it's not a big deal. I just took a trip to Maine and had to keep the bike locked up on the rack the entire trip. It was nice to be able to swing that thing to the side and still be able to open the rear gate. I paid $250 for the rack (retail almost $500) and another $50 for the welding. It’s more than you prob want to spend but think about what you want the rack for. If it’s just to go from your place to the trail and back you can probably deal with just opening up the lift glass. If it’s longer trips you’ll regret not spending the extra money. What ever you get make sure it’s a 2” receiver, the cheap ones are 1” and they suck. If you want the hitch extender I can sell it for maybe $20 to ya, I think it was maybe $40 new with to me with the shipping. If you're not in a rush I hope to do another Pine Barrens run in Oct and I bring it with me. hopefully by then I'll have my breathers extended! |

my parents have a swagman 2 bike carrier on the front hitch of their F150. They have put 6000 miles on it since they retired this spring and love it. There is no movement and it is easy to use. If dad hasn't run over both bikes by now, it must be good. Travis |
