Post subject:  Transmission Range Sensor/Solenoid

So I took my Jeep to the dealer a few weeks ago because of an ongoing problem I've been having with my Jeep. I've been having a problem getting the engine to start. I turn the key, nothing, not even a crank.

History:

First I thought it might be a battery, replaced it with a red top optima. Didn't help.

Next I thought, it must be the starter, replaced that TWICE, nope.

At this point I gave up and took it to the dealer, got a diagnosis of a neutral safety switch. -- $895 TO REPLACE!! Didn't let them fix it.

Next I thought it could be the ignition switch, tested it...not it!

Now my Jeep is in the body shop because of an accident. I called that dealer back and argued with them that it can't be a neutral safety switch, because it doesn't have one. They told be it is not a NSS, but a solenoid inside the transmission. I said fine and hung up the phone. I looked in my FSM and found a Transmission Range Sensor that is part of the Transmission Solenoid. I called up another dealer, they said the part is $384. My FSM says its under the valve body. I'm not very comfortable taking apart my transmission, so they transferred me over to the service department. I'm waiting for them to call back with a quote. I have a feeling this might cost me $$$$!!

Question is has anyone here need to replace this part and is it hard? Should I let the dealer do it? Should I try doing it? Should I take it to a local transmission shop?

I'm still questioning that it could be this part.

Forgot to mention that I have a P1698 code. It came on after I pulled one of the fuses/relays in the PDC under the hood.

I had the valve body out of my 45rfe when doing the shift kit. It was a pain but it's doable. If i'm not mistaken the solenoid pack just bolts to the vavle body. If it were mine i would either disable it or just throw it in neutral every time to start it. What you have going on is a pretty good anti theft system.

Didn't I say something before about that part in another post you had about this? You can have a good tranny shop put it in but if you buy the part and have the part installed at a dealer then you get a 12month/12,000mile warrenty on the repair and part.

Oh and the OBDII code P1698 is the CCD lost communication with the TCM.

TJKJ,

Yes, I do recall you mentioning the TRS in a previous thread. I think I got that code because I removed one of the relays/fuses, don't remember which one, from the PDC. Does that sound right?

If it is in fact the TRS, should the engine start in neutral? I'm a liitle confused!

I found these on ebay:

Solenoid Pack/White Plug

Solenoid Pack/Black Plug

My FSM states:

Quote:
The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) is part of
the solenoid module, which is mounted to the top of
the valve body inside the transmission

Does one of those parts come with the Transmission Range Sensor?

The TRS tell the TCM and PCM what gear the tranny is in,if it will not start in park it may/may not start in "N".From the FSM the second link to fleabay would be the one you want, the first one is for '04+ 45RFE's only. It's hard to tell but it may come with the TRS,contact the seller and ask,or ask a dealership.

You have no problem there,it's supposed to start in "P" and "N".

The FSM also states that the TRS supplies 12V power to the backup lights. If my were actually the TRS, my backup lights would not be working, am I right?

Maybe the 12V is still be supplied and the TRS might be working, but not within SPEC. I imagine its similar to a Riostat and the range is out of adjustment for you. This would make it hard to start in park.

My backup lights work. But that doesn't necessarily mean they my TRS is bad or good. How can I be sure that it is my TRS. I don't want to spend a lot of $$$ and find out later it was something simple.

The dealer said they tested it and it was the TRS/Solenoid pack, but I'm not sure I trust them or their diagnosis.

You really need the DRBIII scanner to verify proper TRS operation, but if your KJ starts in "N" and not "P",or starts in "P" and not "N" that is a very good indication the TRS is not functioning properly.

back from the dead amigos, is this thread.

my jeep won't start in p or n and i have to move the shifter back and forth through the whole range while holding the key in the start position and when it hits some certain point, after a few minutes of rowing through the gears, it will start. this is really a huge pain in the booty and is making the espousa mad.

in park the solenoid just clicks, no crank.
in neutral the solenoid just clicks, no crank.

tranny range sensor?

You just described all the symptoms I had to a tee!! Got to get the Transmission Range Sensor fixed!

They still used 45RFE's in the Ram pickups, hence being for a '04+ 45RFE.

i found another variable that is making me reconsider this solenoid being hte trouble.

my wife has the factory key, i have a copy. hers starts the second time she turns the key, no wiggling the shifter. i have to wiggle the shifter and hold the key and sometimes it takes about 5 minutes of doing this to start. i pulled the steering column covering to check the ignition switch and tumbler and the switch is very poorly held on from the factory. maybe the electrical part of the switch is not properly making contact since it wiggles around very easily? i have to buy the tool to remove it since it is a very tiny odd size of those torque sockets with the little nipple inside of the star shape before i can find out if securing the switch better will help
