Engine block heater/BATTERY BLANKET- Winter is near!

Winter time is coming, and I thought this would be a good time to install an engine block heater on my KJ. Has anyone installed one before?

That's a Mopar part # but can be purchased through many websites.

Can it be put in easily? I know you have to remove a freeze plug, how hard is that?

It looks pretty easy. mrkake (above post) sent me the installation instructions (PDF). I’m sure either he or I could pass them to you. When you purchase the product, it will most likely come with instructions.

i believe that the block heater has to be installed in a specific feeze out plug. not just any freeze out plug will do (for maximum efficiency). maybe the fsm offer in post #2 would help? mike

Description: The heater is mounted in a core hole (in place of a core hole plug) in the engine block, with the heating element immersed in coolant.

Operation: The block heater element is submerged in the cooling system’s coolant. When electrical power is supplied to the element, it creates heat. The heat is transferred to the engine coolant. This provides easier engine starting and faster warm-up when vehicle is operated in areas having extremely low temperatures.

Removal:
1. Drain cooling system
2. Detach power cord plug from heater
4. Loose screw in the center of heater. Remove heater assembly.

Installation:
1. Thoroughly clean core hole and heater seat.
2. Insert heater assembly with element loop positioned upward.
3. With heater seated, tighten center screw securely to assure a positive seal.
4. Connect power cord to heater
5. Fill cooling system

There are aftermarket ones that splice into the radiator return line and are really easy to put in. Stay away from the ones that heat your oil though. I was told that they cook your oil and cause it to break down quicker. I am sure someone more knowledgeable could verify whether that is true or not. I don't have much need for one here in Vegas since it only dips into the 30's a few days out of the year but when I lived further north, it sure was nice to have the heater cranking out hot air as soon as I started my car

. If its really cold and you have to park outside a battery blanket is nice to have too.

It'll be nice not having to plug in the CRD this winter at all .... we now have a 3 stall attached .... I won't be freezing by buns off every time I need to do a little automotive work ... ( now to just keep the garage clean .... it's got a whole mess of flooring tolls and materials in there now along with some moulding being stained and varnished)

just curious here .. does anyone have a pic of where the heater is installed? Our CRD's came with em from the factory ... no worries for install for me at this point.
