the 4.0 in my XJ idled smoother than my KJ's 3.7. There is something catastrophically wrong with a 4.0 or a 5.0 Ford or a TPI 350 if they idle rough and are stock, regardless of mileage.

Now my dad's 3.5L Colorado...THAT'S what I call a rough idle!

is that 3.5L a 5 cylinder? if so that would be a nightmare to balance! just like an inline 3 cylinder.

my wifes 02 and my daughters 03 don't have it but my 05 does. I think I have the problem with something loose that doesn't like having the oil drain away from it overnight.

i also have a 4.0L in a 99 xj and the 3.7L cold start up noise is identical to the 4.0L cold start up noise.

i also found out today that the rough idle is less noticed in the automatic because the torque converter acts as a vibration damper.

80000 on mine and it started making this obnoxious high pitch whine on cold start up. I brought it in to the dealer and they said they couldn't reproduce the noise but said my tensioner is binding and suggested replacing. It was covered under warranty so I said sure. The catch was that the new tensioner came with a different size belt which is not covered under warranty. A $70.00 belt!'' This sucks because I had just bought a new $40.00 belt 3 days before to try and fix the noise. So now I spent $110.00 on belts.

if you have an automatic kj you are insulated from the rough idle!!!! (since there is no direct contact between the drive train and the cabin) but i have a manual transmission and the gearshift sticks right up into the cabin. and you can just watch the manual gear shift just vibrate around, because it is directly connected to the tranmission. but on the auto models you are isolated buy all the rubber mounts, and the fact that (on the automatic) the auto gear shift is not directly connected to the drive train (it is connected to the unibody)!

My gear shift doesn't seem to vibrate much at all. I might happen to have a smoother running 3.7, i do not know, but I do run a good syn oil. Whether one runs rough or not, you will get excellent lifetime mileage out of the 3.7.
My ford 2.9 v6 went 225,000 and still ran great-the vehicle was deteriorating around the drive train- and it always had a rough idle. My 3.7 is much smoother I would say by comparison. Put in a good syn, do the scheduled maintenance or better, and drive the snot out of it.

Hi I read somewhere in this forum that if you have your heater position pointed to your feet it causes your A/C to be on this causes fluctuations in idle. I have mine to face and it's gone.
