Post subject:  Eh?? Verify information about the transmission

I found this on an old review of our KJs from Rockcrawler:

Quote:
The Liberty is offered with either the NV231 Command Trac part-time transfer case or the NV242 Selec Trac part/full-time unit. Both options offer a 2.72:1 low range. A very interesting feature is a new sensor which works in conjunction with the transmissions. On the automatic models, when you shift into low range, the shift points are changed on the transmission for better off-road operation

In the manual tranny versions, the clutch-starter interlock is automatically bypassed when in low-range to allow clutchless starting. 4LO also recalibrates the motor for better idling and compression.

Lastly, if equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes, when shifted into low-range, the ABS is set to a different calibration, aiding off-road stopping.

Is the part about the shift points being changed for better off-road operation in low-range true? I always just through it into 1st gear and if i need a bit more speed shift up manually.

Post subject:  Yes it is

Yes the shift points will change when in low range you might try it in drive but when going down steep inclines shift that bad boy down to 1st gear and let it crawl. later...clint

It will hold 1st during a downhill run, but only to 5mph, then it will upshift unexpectedly - and that ain't good! I put it in 1st when going downhill and need it to STAY in 1st.

But on another note, it seems that the ABS is "recalibrated" but not totally turned off. I was wondering about that last month when going down an extremely steep, wet, leaf covered hill that led to a turn in front of a river!

I actually considered putting it into 4HI just to have full ABS.

Instead, I relied on my superior driving skills  and my BFG's!!!

(The tires held like glue - fortunately!)
