I need help. My dad says i spent to much for a Oil change in my jeep my moms Impala and my dads 1500. I went to the store and got all the oil and filters. I spent 66 bucks.
I say this is a good deal.
He says he could take all 3 out and have someone do it cheaper.

What do you guys think???

for all three? Id say thats cheap, I spend $30 each time I change the oil in my KJ and I do it every 3000 miles my dad takes his truck to the dealership and pays about $20-25 each time but he only goes every 7000 miles

he tells me the same thing, that I spend too much on it and that I do it too often

I have found that I don't really save any money by doing it myself. But what I do gain is being able to use whatever oil I want, personally inspecting the underside of my vehicles for signs of wear, damage, etc. and I usually take the time to give everything a once over while I have it up in the air and in the garage. To me, that gives me peace of mind that I couldn't ever buy somewhere. Image

I save tons of money changing my own oil.

Do you know how much a place charges if you want syn oil(good quality syn oil) and a Pure-one Purolater filter?

Usually its around ~$25-30 for me...

It’s not about how much you pay, it’s about the quality of oil, making sure the used oil has had time to drain, and making sure a good quality oil filter is used.

Amsoil 0W30 (change every 15,000-20,000 miles)
Amsoil filter (Change once a year or every 6 months)

I don't know what he's smoking if he truly believes he's gonna get the oil changed in all three vehicles for $66 bucks total.

Whatever it is, I want some too!

Cheaper ain't always better, also

I use Amsoil and I change my oil and filter every three months or 5000 kilometres. I pay about $36 for the oil and filter. This is a little less than I would pay for Castrol Synthetic, or any other synthetic oil, and a Fram filter.

I like doing my own maintenance and fluid changes, it gives me a chance to see if everthing is OK.

when your Dad first got a car - he could have taken 3 out and gotten the oil changed for less than $66, that day has long gone.

Oil changes around here cost $30-35 bucks, and $50 at a quick lube place both for conventional. Synthetic is probably double the price. I'd say you saved a lot of $$$$...!!!

For $28 bucks I can get a quality syn oil (Mobil 1, Valvoline) and a Wix or Purolator Filter.

I usually spend about $12 to change oil, $8.99 for Mobil clean 5000 5W30, and $3 for a purolator fiilter. If you used all synthetic, then you are still doing a decent job. I know of this local tire place called NTB ( wonder who works there) that had a coupon ofr $16.99 oil change, almost worth taking it there. But you know those places, get ya in, say you need tons of other work, need new tires, all fluids changed, etc
I'd rather do it all myself, at leat I know it's getting done correctly!!!

I know a shop locally that does oil changes for $13, but doesn't mean I should take my Jeep there. Who the hell knows what oil/filter they use, probably used oil. Drain the oil out of one car and fill it in another....!!! I always do my own oil changes. Easy job and you know your putting quality oil.

I use Castrol 5W30 synthetic blend with a Fram Oil Filter every 3K miles, lube all the door hinges, hood pivot points and such, grease the front upper and lower moog ball joints and inspect the under carraige. The fluids and filter less than $25 and I know some newbie at a garage didn't torque my filter to 90 ft llbs!

Ditto........except I have no lift but I roll around underneith on the creeper and while I check everything I also spray all the sway bar bushings, etc......it takes me longer to do an oil change than any one elce.....haha

It's about nobody elce messing with my jeep. And nobody elce cares about your jeep like you do. And nobody elce at an oil change place does what I do. Saving money is the last reason.

OP.....you did alright for 3 vehicles worth of stuff.

I pay $12, normal price is 26.00 Penzoil oil and filter.

I can go to autozone and buy the cheap crap for $10 out the door though, but I only used that in my old beat up vehicles that I didnt plan on keeping verylogn and before I worked at a palce that I could put good oil in for $12

Hey Diesel, have you ever done a used oil analysis to check the life line of that 15,000-20,000 mile oil? I know amsoil is great, but that sure seems like a lot of miles. (I even change my underwear once a week whether I need it or not). I am sure you know what you are doing, just curious....

FWIW, I just received the second UOA on a customers 2005 Ford Mustang. We are running the Amsoil 7500 mile oil in it w/ an Ea series oil filter and this last UOA came back as "oil is suitable for continued use, resample at next regular interval".... It had 9038 hard miles of young kid driving it around town in the LA area w/ short bursts on the freeway. Note, this is Amsoils "cheap" oil, the stuff they market to quick lube places. I wish it was a UOA on the good stuff.

Yeah, not on a KJ but still an interesting bit of info on a real world driven vehicle and the kind of miles you can put on quality oil and filters.
