I found rust on the hood of my 2003 liberty! It's on the bottom side, forming between the frame and outer skin. It goes about 85-90% around the whole seam. I found some on the tailgate too. My liberty is a one owner, low milage (68k) vehicle that has recieved very good care. Just my luck, it is 7 months out of the 5 year/100k rust warranty. Welcome to my life.

Friend of my wife just purchased a 2006 Lexus GX470 , brought it over for me to check out, kept bragging about it, so I found rust in 27 different places around the body, she was not happy with me for finding all the rust!!!!     Plus last oil change was 14,400 miles ago!

People do not keep their vehicles clean enough esp around the doors and hood, etc

Sand down the areas and put some POR on them and be done

Be sure to check the upper area of the lift glass too. [right under the 3rd brake light] That's a piss poor spot for the body seam to be unsealed and it will rust.

I do wash the jambs ect on my vehicles. I have a 1991 Dodge Ram 150 that to this day does not have any rust, that's with 189k miles! I'm not in an area that is known for rust issues. How is sanding the area and applying POR going to get in between the skin of the hood and the frame? And stop rust. It cant. I've got a warranty claim in with Chrysler.

Yep that will do a lot of good. After you battle it out with them they will just paint over the rust and say it's fine.

Like they did on my roof.

We've already had the "that won't help anything" talk. I told them that the panels need to be replaced.

Hmm, wonder if they will agree on that! I hope so.

Update: Chrysler agreed to supply the parts, I have to take care of the rest (that wont prove to be too big of an issue, I manage a bodyshop). Considering that the Jeep is 7mos out of warranty, I'm not going to witch. I just picked up my new hood and tailgate, n/c.

Funny you say that. Depends on where in BC you live I guess. Calgary uses more salt then anywhere I have lived in BC, but I agree with the Ontario thing, they use crazy amounts of salt out there.

 Alberta uses road salt also. LOTS of it in some places:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/ ... ml?ref=rss

Now, you'll find that in the coldest parts of the province, i.e. the north, they use less salt, because it has less effect. In those areas they tend to rough grade with serrated blades, or use layers of grit, like mini rock chips or coarse sand. Same thing in B.C., or all across Canada in fact. In this area we joke about having nothing but gravel roads in the winter. In the spring they sweep up all the grit and then the roads are paved again.... 8)
