Post subject:  struts squeak.
my front struts are squeaking, like an old bed, every time i go over a speed bump. they do it when both of them pass at the same time. not when one passes. what should i do? i just spent like a lot of money on my new tires. what should i do? my brakes are dying too? i wont be driving a lot soon. i have 2 more big trips. one from nyc to boston or buffalo, and then back from nyc to va.

My 05 KJ does the exact same thing. I was told to replace the struts, and I said why not replace the struts and shocks all together because I want my libby to reliable. If I might ask on the sway bar bushings where can I get some and which would you recommend, and how much will they cost?

try just greasing the heck out of the bushings 1st. lots of KJ's have that problem. just get some wd40 and coat them like crazy. thats what i did when my Jeep was squeeking. it made a squeek every time i went over a bump with both wheels at the same time and then i coated them down and all better. there was a thread about this same thing like a month ago.

struts/shocks....they are the same thing? People tend to call the front shocks struts but they are really just shocks , a true strut is different, so who told you to replace the struts? If you have over 30,000 they are gone anyways and need new ones in my book butthats not the sound you hear, or more than likely is not
sway bar bushings squeak in the winter time, nature of them, some lube them, spray them, replace them but its a moving part that will squeak at times when cold. I never even notice mine at all really

DO NOT use regular grease it will make the bushings fail quicker, if anything silicone spray

A local mechanic told me they needed to be replaced with Monroe Struts for the front and Monroe Shocks for the back. He said it would fix the squeak. Said it would cost me $450 to put them on. Also my jeep has approx 63,250 miles on it. It's stock with the struts/shocks, it's also been buried in mud plumb down to the back axle. I've changed the oil with Synthetic and I replace my oil roughly every 4,000 miles. I know that doesn't matter but I do try to take care of my jeep.

Stay far,far away from monroe struts/shocks,they are designed to fail after about 30,000miles so you have to buy new ones.

Save yourself a ton of money and headaches and get the Rancho 17505's(front,will work lifted or unlifted) and Rancho also makes stock length rear shocks for the KJ(17004's if your lifted,made for a stock Durango).The Rancho's have a lifetime replacement and will out last just about any other strut/shocks.

Well how do they ride? I mean I don't offroad or anything like that. I do take some dirt roads but mostly I'm on highway and streets. Okay I have three questions:

Is Rancho really the way to go?
What about KYB?
So I should stay away from Monroe though?

My Rancho's ride great,sure it's a firmer ride the stock but it feels 100% better then the mushy stock ride.

I'd stay away from all those strut/shock companies like monroe,and such.Keep with a good brand like Rancho and OME,there are a few others but mostly make high end stuff for lifted vehicles.Just my opinion though.

so then i'm left just changing the struts/shocks. is there any quick fix while i get back to va and get the whole change with brakes and a tune up?

rear shocks are a 15 minute job, fronts of course you have to pull out the whole assembly to install

well i will do that. and i read should do the investment and go with the ranchos. i got the info on them. i have a friend who works in advanced auto parts, and they give military discount.

Don't use WD40. Get a can of white lithium grease. While your at it grease your hinges and latches.

Well I will get the ranchos for mine thanks for the advice, but found out today since I hit a deer last night that I f'd all my tires by slamming on my brakes it caused them to all have flat spots. So now it has came down to an insurance battle and I hope I can blame the deer for causing my shocks to fail as well.

:lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: sorry you hit the deer but no way was it to blame for the shocks and unless your Insurance Adjuster is dumber than a box of rocks neither will he, good luck :wink:

Can someone just verify for me real quick... Rancho 17505's for the front and Rancho 17004's for the rear. I have the rusty's 2.5in. lift with the shocks they provided and the rear's are leaking, so they're shot and i want to upgrade all four corners at once. Between this and new tires there goes my end of the year bonus :roll:
