Post subject:  CRASH! New bumper?

Well, as some of you know by now, I want a new bumper. Today, as I was again pondering the pros and cons (expense, weight, etc) of a new bumper, I had the decision made for me.

While driving down the LIE, a car carrier decided he no longer needed one of his ramps. You know the ones; those long steel ramps that they use to drive cars up onto auto transportors? What do you figure, they weigh 50 lbs each? Maybe 6 or 8' long?

Well, when they are hit by 5 or 6 cars at 60+ MPH, THEY DO DAMAGE! I think I got off VERY lucky. I could have easily been killed as this thing was tossed up in the air over the roof of a car in front of me after being hit by a car in front of him! I almost got completely out of the way, but alas, I had concrete wall on one side, and flying metal ramp on the other. One more foot and maybe I would have cleared it.

I kept driving and managed to CATCH UP to the truck that lost it. I called 911 and after 90 minutes of police reports, phone calls, them chasing down every car carrier going westbound, Nassau county's finest found the guy! Wahoo! New bumper and fender and it won't even be a claim on MY insurance policy!!!

Anyone have a line on the best deal for an ARB? I NEED IT FAST!!!

darn Adam!!! Glad you're alright!

Coulda been MUCH worse, imagine if that thing came flying into your windshield.....you might not be here to share the experience!

I know i'm not answering your question, but, did you happen to check your rim at all for damage? (scrapes, gouges, etc). Since its not coming out of your pocket or being claimed on your insurance policy, i'd be going over every bit of the front end looking for any scratch that wasn't there, as well as the side of the jeep for scratches of the rest of your front end slying off. Looks like you got lucky also in that it missed your for light and turn signal lamp on that side.

What were some of the other damages like?

I'm all muddy, so I'll have to wash and check, but I think it bounced clear of the KJ. It may have hit my boulder bars!

But good idea about my rims! I have a bent one for sure and it's scratched and chipped. Maybe a new one is warranted.

I'll have my body shop go over it with a fine tooth comb.

I've poked around the internet looking for ARB's and have found Rocky Road Outfitters to be fairly priced.

Adam,

Glad to hear you are safe. Best of luck with the ARB.

In that small piece of luck, I am jealous that you can now get the ARB and have it paid for. But, I wouldn't wish that event on anyone.

I'd try Telico 4x4, some guy was saying his ARB was $717 shipped after our LOST discount. That is the cheapest I have seen or heard about...

I checked them out and it seems tellico might be the cheapest. That or Rusty's. Rusts sells them for 680 but I don't have shipping price yet. I'm guessing it'll be about $110. Tellico sells it for $769 plus about $110 for shipping less 10%. So it'll be between those two I think.

Where is tellico located? Maybe the closer one will be cheaper and faster to ship. I NEED IT NOW!

Rocky Road - $810.00 delivered.

Great. So everyone's in the 780 to 820 range delivered. I'll call them all and see who can get it here the fastest.

I'm off to the body shop for my estimate. Monday the truck's insurance company will take a look at it and hopefully I'll be in a bumper for the holidays. Happy Chanukah little KJ! (yes, my KJ is Jewish  )

Thanks for that tip. I called 4wheelparts and they quoted me 742.97 to my door.

As soon as the insurance adjuster sees it I'll order it. I got an estimate of $2,800 this morning.

Adam, I got my ARB from Tellico for $720 shipped to my door. I checked with them and shipping is $36.00 indeed. They are located in NC.

I'll be there tomorrow.

as for moving, when I lived in TX people got killed routinely from tires and stuff falling off trucks and then landing a few levels below on those multi-level hwys.

I guess no matter where you are things can happen  nothing ever exciting happens in my neck of the woods :( well except for a tunnel falling apart on a major highway during rush hour a few years back

You might want to check up with them because they don't list the KJ bumper on their website.
