My speedometer will sit at zero then just jump all around like it has a mind of its own then back to zero. I noticed it yesterday so i unplugged my battery to see if it may reset itself or something idk. and this morning it worked fine for a few miles then right back to its crazy antics. Any one experience this?/know how to fix it?

The only reason I can think of is: when I took off the black plastic under the windshield that covers wiper mechanism I unplugged the hose to my sprayers then forgot to plug them back in and sprayed windshield washer fluid all in there. but water can get in there regardless.

I checked that harness/clip and it seems fine plastic is cracked so that might be it. but my only symptom is the speedo messing up. oh and while down there looking I noticed my breather tube is dry rotted and almost cracked completely off.. GREAT!! now I need to replace those too and flush my axle.

JL Rockies has heard you can jam a paper clip in the harness and tape it up for a temporary fix.

intermittent speedo = intermittent connection to speed sensor. Check the connection from the wire harness to the speed sensor. Clean off any corrosion and then try reconnecting. If that doesn't work you can replace the speed sensor wire. You get this from the dealer and it comes with about 2 ft of wire with a new connector on the end. You splice this wire in place of the old connector/wire. If that does not work you can replace the actual speed sensor on top of the rear diff. A couple of fasteners and it pops right out. Finally, if that does not work then there is bad wiring/connection somewhere else.

Can this just randomly break though? I haven't been trailing for a few weeks. It just randomly happened the other day when I started my car to ironically come home from advance auto parts.

No matter how it happened the solution is still the same.

yeah , i was just asking in case it could have been something else since that area hadn't seen any stress when it broke. I unplugged it blew on it plugged it in real snug and all last night the speedo worked properly. Thank you for the advice guys. Without these forums it would of been money in the stealerships pocket.

Interesting.... I had two tires put on last week at a shop that used the 2 post lift so rear axle was fully extended, then two days later noticed my speedometer started the fluctuations while on I-95. Maybe full extension caused the 8 year old connection to become intermittent. I will have to get under there and check it out.
