Post subject:  Engine cleaning

I was thinking of going to the "magic wand" car wash and blasting clean my engine bay. Is there anything I would need to be careful of getting wet? Also, I am noticing that my brake fluid is getting pretty dark, and I am thinking of bleeding and replacing the fluid. Is it fairly easy to do?

brake fluid is easy to go, several places you can get bleeder kits that you hook on and go don't cost that much

Blasting :shock: I never do mine at a car was but suppose you could if careful but I would not blast it clean , try a gentle pressure
I always soak mine down in something like Simple Green and then let that soak and then gently hose it off

Never use more pressure than water running out of an open garden hose on these newer vehicles. Simple green like Tom suggested or gunk if you have heavy build-up & a light open hose rinse, just let the water run over the top. Use CD-2 detail spray to spruce up your hoses & plastics & it'll have a nice finish

I use a car wash occasionally when I run mud.Full pressure to clean the radiator.For the engine I use full pressure but hold the wand about three feet from the engine.Cleans well and doesn't force water where you don't want it.
Ahh the brakes.Use a friend or a power bleeder.Use fresh fluid.I use Valvoline synthetic.Begin at the furthest from the master cylinder and closer to it each time i.e. right rear/left rear/right front/left front.If the Jeeps got off road miles begin a day or two ahead of time and spray penetrating oil on the bleeder screws so there are no unnecessary repairs needed.

I use the purple degreaser ( Castrol type) on mine, just have to make sure you wet down any painted sufaces first. I would never use high pressure, garden hose is plenty. I always make sure I wrap a plastic bag around the distributor (if it has one like my Tahoe) and/or the ECM if it's exposed( again like my 'hoe)

I used the Motive Power Bleed 0103. Fill up the Bleeder with 2-3 quarts of fluid, hook it up to the MC and pump it to 15-20 psi and bleed away. Start with the Right Rear then Right Left then Front Right then Front Left. I bled about 1-1.5 qts through the Right Rear. Periodically check the pressure then move on to the next wheel.

I used Valvoline DOT3/4 Synthetic, they don't make the SynPower anymore.

There is no distributor on the KJ. The ignition system is a coil pack system. Each plug/cylinder has its own coil.

I would cover the alternator with aluminum foil. Try to avoid the ECM.

I think I will get the motive at $59.99. Also, I will be able to use it on my Chrysler town and country. I didn't even realize you could get a synthetic brake fluid, so I definitely will do that as well.

Kind of misleading marketing, in my opinion, as ALL brake fluid is synthetic.

I just blast everything. Never an issue.
