Ok so we had 4" of snow here in Richmond. Naturally (happens every time) we lost power. I had to go and fill up 4 jerry cans of gas. Now my little brother desided not to tell me that there was a leak in one of the cans and it spilled gas all over the passanger rear seat. For the past few days I have had my windows down while parked or drving (ITS FREKIN 20* HERE!). I have tried auto-oust, carpet cleaner, and a form of carpet bleech. The gas smell is still there. Any thoughs or input is HIGHLY appreciated. Im getting so tired of the smell im getting ready to replace the entire seat (the 60 not the 40 so it will be PRICY!). Please help me! |

Try taking it to the dealership.. I have this deal with mine where they will clean them for free for the next 5 years.. So.. They might be able to clean yours and charge you a fee but it would have to be cheaper then replacing the 60 part of the back seat.. HTH Ben |

you could try to cover it up w/ some sort of spray - ie febreeze? -nick |

I tried it and it worked for a few hours. Actually Auto-oust worked better than fabreez. |

I used to be on the lumping end of the warehouse business ... I've seen truckers use coffee grounds to successfully get rid of many different smells including fuel and fish. Also may want to try cinnamon for a nice coverup smell |

I like the coffee grounds idea, or something else (baking soda?) to absorb it, not cover it. If you're thinking of replacing it, at least try removing the seat first!! Take it out, keep it in the garage, or just outside under some plastic. Let it air out and fully evaporate OUTSIDE your jeep, then you can at least live in it! Not like anyone will be sitting there anyway, right? |

Problem is probably not the seat cover but the fact that the gas soaked through into the underlying foam. May have to take the cover off and spray/air out the foam and then remount the cover. |

wow that must suck. I would say your best bet is to take it out and take the cover off the seat. |

The exact same thing happened to me. The way I fixed is was I waited for the weather to get warm (60 degrees or higher) and opened all windows (battery disconnected) and doors. Got rid of most of the smell, use a hair dryer to warm up the seat/carpet area, not a heat gun as it WILL ruin the seats. Do this out side with lots of ventillation. Hope this helps! |

first, i would bop my brother upside the head with the leaky can, that way you'll know the one with a dent the size of your brother's head leaks, then, as someone else suggested see if you can take the cover off and ask an auto upholstery place and see how much they'd charge to just replace the foam/cushioning if you can't get Jeep to help you out. |

Man, u must have a younger brother! I do and that was my first thought!!
I would try to let it air before replacing the foam, could be a bit pricey. Maybe take it apart and leave it in the sun for a good while. Even if it's cold the direct sunlight should neutralize the gas. Then maybe a thorough soaking with some lysol and more sunning. |

Alright thanks guys! Thank god the audio place didnt mount my amp on the 60 or I would be SOL for getting the seat out. If anyone has a diagram on how the rear seat bolts up, that would be awsome because I have never taken the seates out of my KJ before. I will take it out tomarro afternoon and give it the whole weekend to air out. Thanks again for all the help guys! Another reason why I love being LOST! Oh and yes I do have a younger brother. He is 15 and acts like he is 10. |

Walmart carries something like febreeze called OdorCyde. It works way better than febreeze. The smell at first is kinda nasty, but once it's aired out a bit, there's no smell left at all. If spraying it doesn't work, you could try pouring it on to let it soak into the foam lol. Hope this helps. |

Ok, who puts a gas can ON THE SEAT? Even if there was no leak, there would still be dirt/gas/mud/oil/etc on the outside of the can. Gas Cans belong on the outside of the vehicle, on the floor, or in the cargo area. Get some of those floor/cargo liners and enforce the "things that are likely to become a mess go on the floor" rule. |

I would do that except that I have next to no cargo space due to my subs. Im getting P/Oed because they take up so much space that I may have to get a new box that will allow more cargo space. Im going to have to get some of those Husky liners for the front and rear seats and maybe even one of those new cargo barriers that someone on here is trying to have a group buy for. The seats are coming out tonight for the whole weekend. I will try a whole bottle of some form of cleaner and maybe even a box of baking soda to pull it up. Leather seats look good right now! |
