getting ready to mount the seats in the cj - on the liberty I have about 3" of space between the top of my head and the roof. On a trail rig should I have about the same distance? I know I don't want my head above the cage, but is there a generally accepted distance? |

accepted varies depending on who ya ask, we were required to have like 4 inches between our helmets and the roll cage unless ya goin with 4 or 5 points you're going to be more than likely layin down towards the passenger side for impact bracing anyway |

I have 5 point harnesses I'm planning on using and I'm going to skin the roof with .125" steel sheet stock. The way I have things laid out right nor there's ~2" of clearance between the top of my head and the bottom of my cage bars... should I try and find a way to get more of a gap ? |

I would want more than 2" of clearance. |

well the most important part is what the distance is from your noggin to the cage itself, you can always cross brace the open section with an X or truss depending on how your cage is mounted you can space it with steel footers your CJ seats are jumpers that really don't have a lifted frame under them do they? |

Okay, I'm getting the picture a little better now. 4" to the skin that you're going to put on the top of the bars. The 2" is the distance from your head to the lower edge of the cage when viewed on a 2D plane. When you sit in the seat, where is the closest bar? Is it the bar over your left shoulder, or the one along the top of the windshield? Or is there a bar just behind your head? |

closest bar would be behind head ( top of b pillar approx 3 - 4" behind the back of the seat ), followed by the bar above the driver's left shoulder and passenger's right shoulder ( approx 5 - 7" away ) |
