OK guys (and girls), here's the deal....i've got a friend with a KJ and he just doesn't want to hear what i have to say about a certain exhaust kit, we'll call it kit "x". Now i want him to get kit "x" for "a" and "b" reasons, but he wants kit "y" or kit "z" for "c" and "d" reasons. So here's the list. I need HP and torque numbers for: Rusty's exhaust kit: Borla Single side exhaust kit: Magnaflow exhaust kit: please make your suggestions, all comments welcome. also, which one will hold up better offroad, and is there any way to protect the more delicate ones? Yea, Ive been searching the internet and found these pretty impressive numbers for magnaflow exhaust: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/dynos/15721.jpg. To me, that seems like a pretty good gain in horespower and torque. Just thought i should let a freind know.... If anyone has actual experience with any of these mufflers on the 3.7 L let me know, thanks... |

BTW, this is the friend that doesn't listen(RipTide7), he's hell bent on numbers, i'm worried about amix of numbers, sound (nice and deep, nothing tuner), and durability offroad. |

Hey SavageSS27,don't know what kind of response you'll get.I asked if anyone knew anything about a Gibson Performance Exhaust.I was sent one instead of a Magnaflow Ex. from Autopartswarehouse.I guess the 65 people that looked at it never heard of it before.I found it highly unusual that there was not at least one comment about it from some of the people on the site that seem to know everything.Good luck!! That seems to remind me of that saying "Jack of all trades Master of None"....... |

haha, nice saying, well i'm just hoping to get some kind of response, i just listend to my friend's favorite (at least until he heard it) exhaust. The magnaflow kit. It makes the truck sound like a little friggin rice burner. At least all the trucks that were on thier "hear it" page. No libby's, but everything else sounded like $#!T (pardon me). They even made a big, burly V-8 sound like a 1.6L I-4 with 5 HP |

Ok, well, i promised myself to remain impartial, but too bad. I voted other, and i'm saying, go with the Rusty's for the flowmaster muffler and the exit pipe, and then get a nice high flow cat. and be done w/ it, how much HP you think we're looking at??? 30, 40, 50? |

You'll be lucky to get 15 horsepower. The gibson exhaust is a good budget alternative. I had one on my old F150. I got better mileage and the truck sounded throatier (it was a 300 cubic inch inline 6, plenty of torque). The power gain was noticeable but nothing to brag about. The 30, 40, 50 horsepower numbers generally only come after you get headers, mandrel bend EVERYTHING, remove the cat and have a larger engine. When my dad put dual exhaust on his 1996 Suburban, it felt more powerful and probably gained something like 10% more horsepower, but he had no mufflers (unless we are counting the two glasspacks), no cat's (we dont have emissions testing in Minnesota), and a significantly larger pipe. if you want a 30-50 horsepower gain on a naturally aspirated motor, you will need to spend quite a bit of money, way more then a $500 exhaust. Try a $1200 set of cylinder heads (which aren't available to us yet, i dont think). If the cylinder heads don't do it, put a different crankshaft in for a longer stroke. Or bore out the cylinders. Be realistic. |

oh well, you can't blame a guy for being realistic....if Magnaflow claims an 18HP increase with just a cat. back system, i don't think 30 is that unreasonable for a new muffler and cat...."the synergy of the parts is greater than the sum of the whole" or something like that. |

You can tell the dyno chart on the Magnaflow site is fake for several reasons. it has irregular peaks and valleys...and it doesn't show an actual advantage on the top end, which is the most likely place for an aftermarket exhaust system's flow increase. |

Those were kinda my thoughts too....i think we've ruled that one out totally by now, we go to school together and have spent most of the past few days trying to figure out what to get. I'm trying to steer him towards a Rusty's kit because it seems like a great muffler that will hold up well offroad and still give a nice Flowmaster rumble. I'm also now considering the Borla as some people have been saying that it is more performance oriented than others. The way i see it, i'll just get the Rusty's kit and a high flow Cat. and if i want more power/volume later i'll just pick up a Hushpower II. -Savage- |

Hey, I should have started the KJ while you were over for the install party. I have a magna flow free flow cat, flow master hushpower, and a custom SS tail pipe. All are 2.5 inches in dia. Seat of the pants, a little more power, just a slight increase in gas mileage (maybe .5 miles/gal), and when I don't act my age, a real nice, albeit noisey, sound. Too loud when I am acting my age! One of the guys I know is waiting for me to get picked up for a loud exhaust. It should be noted that the hushpowers are rated 250HP and below, so if you do put on the KJ you are very close to the max. HP you can put thru them. I believe the mufflering properties and performance (ie. the flow) suffer when you exceed the hp limit of a muffler. Al |

I would vote for the Flowmaster 40. If you like it loud that is. I have been told it sounds like a v8 with the muffler. It has gotten a little louder since putting it on as well. I like the cackle from the pocket. Loud pipes save lives. |

I have the Mopar Stainless dual exhaust made by Borla. I like it alot, it is a little bit louder than stock, but not too loud. It sounds real nice above 2000 rpms. I picked it up on ebay for about $450. Rick |

Flowmaster...75 bucks from Summit Racing. Had it weled on for 25 bucks. Done deal. Sounds great and was the best performance mod so far. why pay for a 2.5 pipe when you already have it. later...Clint |

Cool.. I like that mod... Not that expensive and has benifits at the same time.. I have only one question.. Why is the Libby muffler so freakin HUGE.. I mean.. That thing is big... Compared to my YJ muffler.. Ben |

i agree with clint and thats exactly what the guy that did my exhaust said also. the only thing restrictive is the muffler so i spent 80 bucks and had it replaced. |

I would go with the magnaflow. A friend of mine has one on his libby, and the difference on top end is very noticeable. Mine seems to get to about 4k and just starts wheezing, his pulls pretty well. Also his is considerably stronger off the line, but he says he noticed the biggest difference on the low end when he installed his powertrax. I had great results with magnaflow on my 01 Trans Am not that you can really compare the two, but the quality and sound are great. I'd go magnaflow in a heartbeat. IF your gonna be bashing it on the trail, I'd get the cheapest one with a decent increase. Unfortunatley in the 4x4 world, most rigs don't hit the dyno like in the muscle car world so it's difficult to get real world numbers. I would only replace the muffler, not get the entire "cat back" system, that's just a waste of money. |

Flowmaster, I don't run one on my KJ (yet...) but when my dad was restoring his Galaxy (1962, big block, 3 on the tree, convertible, 20's) we tried a Magnaflow, a Dynomax, and a Flowmaster-Flowmaster had the deepest tone. It wasn't loud like the dynomax, but it was a deep low rumble. Like all cars should have. I used a Flowmaster on my 4.3 V6 in my Blazer when I put duals on it and it had a decent rumble and made a bit more power (geussing 10-15). The headers were what really woke it up and made it scream. They made an honest 20 horsepower. No crossover pipe, no cat, just two pipes from the headers back to the mufflers then out two 3 inch tips. I think I will skip the duals on the liberty (it just ain't right with less then 8 cylinders). I just want something compact that hangs up nice and high preferably stainless steel as aluminum is too weak for the rigors of off road duty. |
