Painting Fenders?

OK I guess I have the "spring" itch, I just got a quart of the black bed liner, and those gray fenders / bumpers are about to go away. I'll probably take off the fenders ect.... to make it easier to roll the paint on. But the bumpers i'll have to brush on as best i can. Any advice from anyone that's done this would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone wishes I'll try to document the procedures.

I've also seen where people have painted the bed liner on the grille, since i have to remove it to paint the bumper anyway, I'm thinking of painting it to, but I'm wondering if that's going a bit too far and a little to much, lemme know your ideas everyone, good or bad.

Rough sand them, hit it with acetone and paint. Simple! There are quiet a few threads on it, hit the search button for more pics.

Bedlined and painted grill, Fenders, bumpers, and beltline.

Your saying hit the acetone just to clean the plastic right, I didn't think i need to rough sand it but it sounds feasible, probably help it stick a little better, how did you put yours on (looks awesome btw) did you brush, roll, or spray it on?

I would sand it to rough it up more, I used 80 grit when I did my bedliner and it sticks perfectly! I love it, but sand, wipe with acetone and paint just like Daspes said. What bedliner did you get?

Mine was the roll on Plasticote brand. Doing the whole Jeep took about a half a gallon. And yes, you will need to sand the fenders to rough them up, or the liner will end up peeling off.

An old friend of mine recommended Gator Guard, said he's helped people use it on horse trailers and pickups for a while. So that's what i got, it comes with 1qt liner and 1qt thinner, I've never dealt with bed liner before so it may be interesting.

I'll try to take pictures as i go, that way you'll know how bad i screw up, the only problem is....how far do I go, and can i stop once i get started.

Another question, what about painting the stock rims black..... you know until i can afford better

go for it same process, scuff clean but I would probably prime them and then paint and then clear coat

Prep is the key to any job. A lot of good sanding on the wheels especially the corners. Then prime, and light coats of paint, don't get in a rush.

I just purchased a bunch of black spray on rocker guard and plan on doing the same thing. (Already tested the rocker guard out on one of our recycle bins, texture looks great, easy to use, wife wasn't impressed with her new black textured recycle bin though :wink:

rocks can be recycled right?, so what's the big deal?) I chose the spray because it's easy to do touch ups on trail rash later.

I want to do the rear bumper, wheel well flares, but I don't think I want to go right up the doors so I will probably just do the rockers and rock rails.

Since the only millenium grey on my Liberty will be the ARB bumper and the stock renegade rims, and the jeep will now have so much black I am also considering spraying the ARB bumper and rims.

I am planning on doing this some time in the last 2 weeks of June when I am off work so I have just been getting everything I need together and going through the removal,install instructions for the wheel flares, rear bumper etc etc. Since I am spraying I would prefer to remove everything that is getting sprayed minus the rockers of course. However the plastic rivets used on the wheel flares (11 per flare) are not re-usable and the dealership wants $2 a piece for them. I have seen in another thread were someone found plastic rivets at Lowes, but I don't have any around here. So I am likely going to end up using metal rivets to put them back on.

At any rate, I am definately interested in seeing how yours turns out, whether you remove the parts to do them, and if so what retainers you were able to re-use, and what you had to purchase to re-install.[/img

Yea I thought about the doors too, but since I don't own a spray gun I don't trust myself to it right and make it look good. If I do the doors I'd proly have to rent a spray gun from auto zone or someplace like that to do it. And if your like me you probably already have a sack full of masking tape too

At the 2008 LOST Moab Safari we had a memorial run for a member of this board who passed. Matt always had an intel bunny with him, so we all threw on our KJ's and did a run in remembrance.

When you painted the bottom of the doors (I think i talked myself into it too), did you take off the "liberty" body molding or did you just paint it with the rest of the door. I'm asking cause i can't really tell from the pics. I'm thinking of taking them off and just painting them with a can of black plastic bumper paint i have.

And this project is scheduled for the weekend after this one, the weather is supposed to be nice and it'll give me time to do it.

No I left it on. Tapesd off the top of the beltline, sanded and cleaned the area, hit the corners and crannies (like at the molding) with a brush, and then rolled the rest out.

All right thanks, that's kinda how I was planning it out in my head. I think the planning phase is done, I'll just wash it and get some before/after pics up here proly next weekend.

Looks good so far, now pull the tape off so we can see the finished product! Any reason you didn't do the rocker trim too?
