Post subject:  Hissing noise

I've done some searching, but haven't found anything specific. If I'm missing something then please let me know...

To the rear of the Liberty there is a hissing noise when it idles. Now I've "assumed" that it is the fuel pump being that there is nearly 150k on the vehicle. The noise started some time ago & has progressively gotten worse. I've just been procrastinating on getting anything done about it.

Does this sound like it might be right or is there something else I should be checking?

Thanks

Check all the hoses around the gas tank. After a while some of the vacuum lines crack. They might look okay but put your hands on them and feel for moving air. I have had this problem before exactly as you describe.

Throwing any codes? Wouldn't a leaking evap cannister throw a code?

I guess that's a possibility, but no codes have shown & this has been ongoing for some time now... It hasn't harmed performance or mileage so I never really messed with it, but now its just getting to be very annoying... :)

Mine does the same thing. I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump. It's been doing it since i got it at 44k miles. It now has 128k and hasn't gotten any worse.

Haha... Yea, mine has gotten louder as time passes, but still seems to be working just fine. I'm just at the point that it is EXTREMELY annoying so I want it to go away... :D

lol, mine does the same thing. I thought mine was just a loose exhaust pipe fitting somewhere. Mine is a bolted on Catback. I just ignore mine :) I ignore a lot of noises on my KJ. It is a jeep after all and they are suppose to be noisy. LOL. If you figure out what it is let me know...maybe I will take a look at mine. I am going to swap out the rotors this weekend along with new pads of course. Tired of the shaking when I slow down.

Anyone manage to pin this down to a specific part?

I've had the hissing for a while, but I didn't really notice it until someone else pointed it out. At that point I wasn't sure if it was a noise the Jeep had always made or if it was something new.

Anyway, it's pretty annoying now that I know it's there and I'd like to fix it.

Well, I checked out the vacuum lines when I had the Jeep up in the air this weekend & could not find any leaks or damage... Unless someone has a better idea I think that just leaves the fuel pump.
