| Post subject: | lockers and towing |
I plan on getting either an aussie locker or the detroit locker for the rear end and wonder how adding a locker will effect towing. I plan on towing my mini cooper back to Seattle when i move back there next year when i get out of navy. i don't want to spend the money on ARB lockers because i do want to do an SFA later on, but i do want to get a locker for the rear end right now. |

no but I wish I was I could use the money lol, but the Detroit is just a better locker IMO, you will virtually never break it and I would be more weary of a lunchbox locker and towing, Im sure it would be ok but Id rather have something I dont have to worry about |

X2 on the DL I have it and it is worth every penny. you will get some tire squeak when turning slowly. But nothing that is going to cause adverse effects, and this is towing about 5,000 lbs. |

thanks for the input. the mini is only 1000 lbs. so it won't be too hard to pull. |

You're just going to prematurly wear your tires. ARB's rule! |

I have a Powertrax no-slip in a 4x2 Dodge Ram 1500, and it has worked great. Its been on for about 3 years and I have had no problems towing light loads (have not towed anything heavy) or with tire wear. It was inexpensive and has greatly improved traction. The downside is that you need to be easy on the gas around corners, or you will get some chirping. |

from what i am told the dl has its own carrier that takes the stress away from the housing reducing the chance of failure. OK now i have spent all of my gained knowledge |

Yes it does, the DL, DTT, ARB and Ox lockers are all full carrier replacements which is much stronger than any lunchbox locker which just replaces the spider gears. |

when has anyone ever heard of someone breaking the carrier in a KJ... Never!! and the aussie has a warranty for a year with no tire size limitations. Which means if i was running 40's that's the same warranty as me running my 32's and is only $300.. which means for the cost of a DL you could almost buy 2 aussies.. and that's before you Pay someone to install the DL since it is a very complex install... where i put my aussie in for free in 2 hours in my garage. and in the end.. they have the same road manors. and both still lock the wheels with power to them.. and unlock without power to them. just thought i'd give my 2 cents on why i went with the aussie |

ThunderbirdJunkie bets if he inspects your tires, he can spot the one that spends most of its time on the right rear 2006 KJ wrote: when has anyone ever heard of someone breaking the carrier in a KJ... Generally the biggest issue with oversized tires is the diameter of the tires themselves. Tires should always be run at the tire pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The diameter of the tires should be within 3/8” of each other on the same axle. If one tire has a larger diameter either from pressure difference or manufacturing variances it will cause the locker to constantly lock and unlock creating excessive wear and this will void the warranty. Replace any tire that is outside of the recommended tire diameter allowance. Another area to consider when installing a locker in a vehicle with oversized tires is that this type of setup puts significantly greater stress on the original equipment manufacturers components in the differential. The locker is designed to withstand these stresses but should another component fail, and the locker is damaged, the locker is not covered under warranty. Under no circumstances does Torq-Masters Technology, Inc, warranty cover parts that we do not supply as part of the order. Quote: This warranty covers the original purchaser only. This warranty does not cover defects caused by any of the following: modification, alteration, repair or service of the product by anyone other than by the manufacturer, or its authorized representative, physical abuse to or misuse of the product, improper diagnosis, installation or operation thereof in a manner contrary to the installation manual accompanying the product, and road and/or accident damage.

actually yes it still does. they say you can not run 2 different sized tires on the rear end.. and also if say.. your carrier does break and take out the locker it wont be covered. if the locker itself breaks it will be covered reguardless if they are 40's or 32's.. as long as you dont have a 40 and a 32 on the same rear end |
