Hey all...

2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4.

So heading out to Anza Borrego today, everythign is fine in the Jeep. Make it about 60 miles, go to pass somebody, Jeep starts backfiring and won't go above 55mph or shift. Check engine light starts flashing so I pull over.

The engine was shaking pretty bad and you could hear the sputtering coming out of the exhaust. Check engine light is still on, solid though not flashing. So I turn it off and disconnect the positive battery just to reset everything.

Start it back up, running a little better, light isn't on but still shaking abnormally. Start driving up and down this side road trying to get the light to come back on, no avail. Floor it and it starts backfiring and again wont go above 55mph.

So I take out all the plugs that go to the coils and blew them out a little and plugged them back in. No change.

What do you think could be wrong? Spark plugs have about 6k on them with no problem, I haven't changed anything in the past month on it and have gone on 100 mile trips with no problems.

The only difference is the gas. I got it at a gas station I normally don't go to and got it early in the morning.

Thanks in advanced.

Ryan

do not drive it

acquire a scangauge or other scan tool and check and see what the codes are

if that doesn't answer the question in a definite manner i'd pull the plugs, if that doesn't provide an answer, i'd drop the oil plug and hope you don't end up with pieces of piston (not to be an alarmist)

but we do have valve problems with our KJ's

a non-alarmist response:
make sure your airfilter isn't stopped up and make sure you haven't hit something in the road to crush the exhaust somewhere

For starters, throw a can of dry gas or Sea Foam in the tank. Sounds like you may have got a bad batch of gas with water in it.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but you didn't accidentally put diesel in there, did you?

So what are the codes that it's throwing?

That would be a nice start.

So I got it to throw a code today...P0300. Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected.

It basically just stopped accelerating today after trying for about 10 minutes and was just sputtering like crazy.

Took it too the dealer, I'll see what he says.

It could.

But, ThunderbirdJunkie would rather have him pull all 6 plugs and take pictures of them so we can look and see if it's a lean condition or a rich condition.

This thing is starting to happen to a few peopl ein the past few months. It had happend to me 3 time since the winter. My codes were p0305 and p0306
mis fire on 5 and 6. I checked everything and could not figure it out. it would only happen on a decend. once I shut off the engin and fire it back up it will run fine again.

Dealer can not figure it out either. I even checked all the wires to find any breaks and came up with nothing. I even bough a test light for the injectors.

let me know if you figure it out.

Well after machining the cylinders and replacing the spark plugs, valves and lifters they went for a test drive and it just completely died in the middle of the road.

Looked at it some more and said there was gas in the CAT and muffler, fixxed that and the same thing happened.

Now they are putting a entirely new engine in there from the pan up.

THAT'S IT!!! Man, I'm really sorry to hear that. My 04 has 110k. That engine is still a child. Is that still under warranty? I hope so.

Which dealer are you messing with?

Yea to say the least this is our first Jeep and most likely our last...we've been very lucky everything has been under warranty but when the time comes that the warranty is out I think it's long gone out of our hands.

Were going through Rancho Jeep.

Hopefully you don't give up on Jeeps. It may be a lemon if your already having the tranny replaced after 55k and now this. The bright side is that you get a new engine added with that new tranny!
