Post subject:  Straight piping a V6 Lib?

Looking over the CRD forum I saw that one of the guys straight piped it and he thinks he likes it. I know being in Germany with all of the inspections that we have to go through I wouldn't be able to get away with it. I just wondering if anyone has done it and if they liked it?? I remember straight piping my 95 mustang V6 and I loved the sound that it produced and beleive it or not there was an amazing amount of more torque.

Hey I think you are referring to me. I straight-piped my CRD for a while. But I have since installed a Magnaflow muffler to quiet it down just a little. One thing to remember is that CRD engines and gasoline engines are two different animals. On a CRD engine the turbo provides a little backpressure and the very nature of the engine makes it very profitable to run a straight-through exhaust. The straighter the exhaust on a diesel the better. On a gasoline engine it's a little different. Gas engines need the muffler in order to make the power and torque they were designed to make. I think you might like straight-piping your V6, but chances are you'd be much happier with a performance muffler welded on in place of your stock muffler. I am really loving the Magnaflow now and I think I'm going to stick with it forever. Good luck!

Straight piping a DIESEL engine will do wonders for performance for the better. Just read the Forums of some of the diesel trucks site.

My old F-350 powerstroke was and it made a lot more power. Just dont try it in a gas engine. They need the backpressure
In the diesel world the call it "Gutting the cat". With that said, yes it is illegal according to EPA cops.
Most diesel guys just take rebar and tamp out the cores. then reinstall the houseing back on to look like it still has a cat.
If they have one close go to a diesel drag race some time... Pretty cool.

Yea everyone keep telling us to take the mufflers off our race car as well. They keep telling us how much faster it will run without them. Yea right. i would recommend.. if you want to get more HP and torque...buy one of the great kits out there for the diesels... There are just too many outstanding kits on the market that are tuned with the computers for any one to start butchering their hi-dollar vehicle up. Just my thoughts. Later...Clint

Skrracing is right. Most people don't know what they're talking about when dealing with exhaust. People will tell you that you don't want back pressure (you actually do need some believe it or not). Most gains come from exhaust flow. The only way to improve flow are things like free flowing mufflers and cat's. Mandrel bends are also a great way to speed up the flow of your exhaust, of course most exhaust shops don't have the machine to make a mandrel bend, a well made kit is the way to go. If you buy a kit, look for things like stainless steel as it wont rust and is very tough, madrel bends, and a well designed muffler. The 4x2 section has lots of info on the subject.

Well i guess all the guys that build up diesel engines (my self included) and race them dont know any thing about makeing power. :roll: Unlike gas engines back pressure in a diesel is a bad thing.
Gee i guess all the races that i have won was just a fluke :lol:
Now i know a libby is not a race truck but the most of the same performance tricks work. Most of all is not to drive up the exhaust temps up too high.

I'm not sure about the newer motors, but on the farm trucks we used to run had straights. Did'nt matter if they were gas or deisel, they performed much better.

A diesel engine responds totally different to modifications then a gas motor. Since the question was regarding a V6 liberty (doubt there are too many diesel V6 libbys in the world), and not a diesel, straight piping will hurt performance. My '86 chevy 1/2 ton 6.2 diesel had dual's with 3 pipe and nothing but glass packs, she'd run right alongside my buddy's 6.5 Turbo Suburban. On a diesel, with or without a turbo, straight piping helps because you don't need the scavenging effect you do with gas because of the high compression ratios.

That has me thinking, International/Ford is working on V6 Tubrodiesel for there light duty trucks/suvs.
Given all the hop up stuff they have for the PSD. With the Mini PSD comeing out it might make a cool mod someday.
Not practical given all the electronic stuff they will have it on it. but COOL just the same.
GAWD why cant i just leave good enuff alone :twisted:
