Post subject:  ac compressor (fan clutch). Updated (now in garage)

So the story goes that the past few days the cooling/heating fan in the jeep (ie defrost, ac) has been acting up. The lights on the switches have even been acting up (not related to clutch I'm sure). On the highway I could smell burning when I tried to turn on the ac (sometimes). When we got home we could hear a noise (can't describe) from under the hood. My neighbor came over to give me some help and we figured the noise went away when the ac was turned on. He said it was probably the ac fan clutch, and the big problem is if it seizes it burns the belt and can burn out my alternator and water pump. I did some reading in the service manual and it doesn't look too hard to change, but what I'm wondering is what cost I can expect, and does this diagnoses sound correct, or is there something else I am missing?

So due to the fact this is my wife and I's only vehicle, and we have some things we need to get to wednesday, we decided to let the local jeep shop take a look and give us there opinion. They said we need a new compressor, and total cost will be just under $1000 with installation. We said fine :( I know I can get a new fan clutch for $300 but the problem is if that is not the only problem, we will not be able to be on the road in 2 days. This way we get it fixed by tomorrow.
