I looked under the hood the other day to check it out after my most recent mudding trip and it needs to be cleaned.

What is the best way to clean it without damaging anything?

Many have just used Simple Green. I have after the suggestions and it works great. Low pressure water to rinse. Don't aim the water for very long at any one thing. Use a brush to get the nasty spots.

How clean do you want it, showroom sparkle (like Jeepjeepster does his) or just basically clean?

get some of that purple "simple green". dilute as needed, soak the engine bay in it for a little bit, cool engine is best i think. then hose it off! i never cover anything up, just hose it off, i never had a problem with water getting in places. i take it for a quick drive up and down the highway to air the engine bay out and blow some water out

Ok, sounds good.
I just want it like.....cleanish.
I just don't want a bunch of mud build up.

Mud only exists theoretically around here. But does Simple Green actually do anything for it that water alone wouldn't? I thought it was more for degreasing.

I still cover any electrical connections under the hood on my KJ just to be safe, along with covering the air snorkel.

used to clean under the hood with a regular rise to knock dirt off, then wax to make it shine. never had a problem. Really caked area you may wunna try to knock some dirt off first
