| Post subject: | A lesson from Towstrap's accident |
After hearing about Towstraps accident and how he was stuck underwater with a failing seat belt release and an lost emergency hammer/knife that broke loose during the roll I thought it would be important to show/suggest a kind of knife everyone should consider installing in their jeep should they find themselves in water and unable to release the seat belt.
http://newgraham.com/store/product/63/Benchmade-Rescue-Hook-BM5BLK/ It's kydex clip can be sewn onto your belt in any position and wherever along the belt you like (I prefer that it sits right on my chest with the ring facing my left side). So all you have to do is place your hand on top of it and pull it out and pull it across your belt to cut yourself free. Or if you see someone else have an accident you don't have to think about where you have it stored. |

Can you reach it when the belt retractor won't let you? Console would better spot. |

Good thought. I have a Spyderco SS Sheepsfoot knife I should start keeping at hand in the Jeep. Normally I just have a hammer or tomahawk on hand (electric windows smashed quickly and efficiently). I guess I never thought about the seatbelt not releasing. Wish I could go back to the seatbelts I had in my 1961 Chevy.. reliable flip-latch release like on the airplanes. |

I've honestly never even considered this kind of situation happening, but you should always be prepared. What exactly happened with Towstrap anyways? |

Wow, that's some crazy stuff. I'm glad he is okay. I was just in a flipped Jeep the other week, and it was not fun. We only rolled once. Almost 3 times into water sounds so scary. |

Got my Leatherman belted to my side at all times. I never realized how much I needed one, until I got it. It'll cut a seat belt, break glass, help re-wire old postal jeep starting relays, act as an emergency wrench, etc. And you don't even have to worry about neighbor kids breaking into your KJ, then stabbing themselves with it, since I carry it with me. (Yes, the little monsters broke in, and stole a folding knife AND brake controller last summer). |

What if you have a gun holster mounted to the seat? How bad would that be? |

I've got high explosives set on mine. If water is detected in the cab, the explosives blow the roof off and the seat out of the vehicle. I haven't figured out the return-to-earth problem yet. |
