Post subject:  help with fender flares
Can someone tell me how to remove the fender flare plastic rivets without breaking them? I want to take out my wheel well liners to poke around and I already broke one. what did I do wrong?

Not sure how the newer style is but on mine, 02, you have to drill them out and put new ones in. But they are cheap, i just picked up a box of 20 for 5.99 at napa...

They are really cheap at auto parts stores, and you can probably get the "fake" rivets at the Jeep dealership.

I tried saving the rivets when I did this:

Are you serious? that is a horrible design flaw IMO. I thought there was a way to pop the center pin and then they come out. Do you remember the size or did you just take 1 down to match up?

i had to order them, i found the number on the lost board - its 7702871 - a pack of 20 for 5.99 from napa auto.

So basically if I take em off they are staying off, until I can buy some new plastic rivets?????

I double checked the ones that i got from napa and these are the ones you need... -

They are 25 for 6.00 plus shipping so really not that great of deal when i got 20 for 6 somthing with tax and no shipping from napa...

You do not need to drill them out, you can use a punch to push/tap the center up, but as for re-use, there is just no way since you do not have enough shaft left to pull it tight.

Ok break it down barney style for me. do you use a puch to hammer them out ?

OK, if you look at the head of the plastic rivet, you will see the center shaft in the middle.

use a punch the same size or I used a leather awl, then place it on the top of the center shaft and if you are lucky, you can push it straight up if not one good tap and it will go into the rivet. Then use a pair of Dikes (no one dike will not do it alone :twisted: sorry bad joke, and I shouldn't have gone there, but oh well) or wire strippers and pull the rivet out of the bottom of the flare.

Then I used a pair of thous cheap thin all purpose wire stripper/cutter/crimper plier to pop the tabs in the sheet metal. I wrapped it in an old pair of fleece shorts to protect the paint, then stick it in between the flare and sheetmetal, find the tab (you got to pull on the flare a bit) pinch both sides to squeeze it and it will come out of the sheet metal.

Barney style enough for ya? :D

BTW, why are you taking the flares off?

BTW, why are you taking the flares off?


I want to take off the wheel liners, and i noticed that in order to get em out you have to remove some of the rivets from the flare. i tried it yesterday and could not get the liners out. and in the process broke one of the rivets already.

Thats why i was partly confused, and asked for the Barney version So I just need to remove I think 2 plastic rivets in the middle of the flare in order to get the liner out. is it the same process as mentioned above?

Ok im a lil confused here. From what i understand, in order to get the wheel well liner out I know that there is 3 or 4 rivets or plastic screws holding it in the wheel well. Also in order to remove the wheel well liner i have to either remove or break 2 of the rivets that go into the fender flare because the wheel well liner is tucked up in there. Is that my understanding?

These plastic clips are replaceable, too...right? I broke one or two in the rear fender flares from flexing. Does anyone have a product # or code for these?

I just received my rivets today and they have a bigger head on them then the stock ones. I guess they will work. Secondly what or where can a get a cheap rivet gun to do the trick?

no need to buy a rivet gun, i just did mine tonight and you just use plyers to hold the rivet then use a vice grip and roll the vice grip over the plyers and the rivet sets in place and the center part will break off.
