I know a web forum isn't the best place to get help with noises but it's worth a shot. I've got something coming from the front passenger tire that at first sounded like tires needed to be rotated/balanced or maybe a warped rotor. Over time though it's gotten worse and now sounds like a harsh clanking sound. I just had tires taken care of and it's not an issue with the brakes because I never feel it when I'm on the brakes. It seems to happen the worst at ~70-75. It's loud and you can feel it in the steering wheel. It's definitely a cause of concern at this point but wanted to see if I could get some insight before it goes in. I've always thought it was the front struts, when I hit a dip or speed bump you can really hear them compressing but would this cause something at higher speeds?

Have you checked the CVs yet? Seems like that is a problem that comes up Another members sounded something like that and neded both the CV and the intermediate shaft as well.

Mine started out as a slight noise at slow speeds and I changed it out before it got louder!

I think Mr. Mudd is probably right. Sounds like it might be the same horror I just went through with the CV Stub Shaft.

Read the recent post from a couple of days ago about Wump-Wump Sound for more details.

Mine came on at 40mph, got louder and louder. You could feel it in the steering wheel, real metal thump sounds that you don't want to hear. For a while, I thought it was a tire too, then a Ball Joint, then a Wheel Bearing.

Great! From reading your post and problems it sounds like the same thing. Any chance you have a round about # on the cost to fix that?

Napa has reman'ed CVs for about 55/60 bucks Get the Reman'ed ones because they are the right length.
The intermediate shaft is 100 or so I think. I lucked out and bought one a couple of years ago from another member for cheap.

Will look up the cost here in a few

yea its probably either the cv/intermediate shaft splines that are worn like Tom said, or it could possibly be a bad wheel bearing, that makes a sound like a bad tire whump whump whump. my old 89 wrangler sahara had a bad wheel bearing and it thumped around like a bad tire.

check your CV first though, passenger side, where the CV goes into the aluminum axle tube, there will be a big fat round end on the CV cup, wiggle that up and down and all around. if that moves a lot and clanks around, you need a new CV AND intermediate shaft. replace them together, since the splines wear away together. if you just replace the CV, your new CV splines will be hurt from the worn out intermediate shaft splines.

the dealer around here wanted about 160-180 for the shaft, i get about a 10% discount so i think i ended up paying like 150-160 for the shaft, its only avaliable at the dealer, but the CV's you can get from NAPA like Tom said.

Good conversation!

My repair was at the CV stub shaft, a broken "C" clip causing the shaft to work free inside (so I am told) and wobble to it's doom.

I got lucky and my wump-wump was under the x-tra extended warranty I bought at the time of purchase so I did not have to pay for the CV repair. I didn't ask the cost when I picked Libby up.

The mechanic at the dealership and myself included also thought it might be a wheel bearing. When they go bad as mentioned above, they too can wump-wump you.

I did have to pay for the wheel bearing set yesterday: $422.00 installed. Silver lining if there is one, at least now I have an x-tra perfectly good wheel bearing don't I.

Notice another sound that probably points to it being the CV, I've heard it before but didn't think much of it. When slowing down I can hear a sound on every revolution of the tire, it sounds like there's something sticky on the tire almost. Which is part of the reason I wrote it off the first time I heard it. With everything else though I'm sure this has something to do with the CV's/Shafts if they're going bad.

If you are hearing all of that then yes 98% sure its the CVs and the intermediate shaft

Well, took it to a buddy of mine today with an auto repair shop here in town and he claims it's either the wheel bearings or something in the diff. He's leaning towards a diff problem and I'm praying for wheel bearings! In the meantime I keep hoping someone will "nudge" the front end but leave everything else in tact. :)

it will sound like its in the diff due to the fact that the CV and interediate shaft go together about half way back in there.

I was wrong one time before :shock: but my moneys still on the CVs :wink:

His reasoning for guessing the diff was when it started to shake and he decelerated in 2wd the vibration went away all together. When we ran it up in 4wd and he decelerated there was about a second that you could still feel it. I'm not a mechanic so I don't really know what that says but just relaying the info. However I did pass on that you thought it was the CV and intermediate. We're going to get it in next week and pull the shafts and see if the problem goes away, he claims if it does that it has to be in the diff, should I suggest he looks at other possibilities even if the vibration does go away?

edit: I hope it's the CV's as well, sounds much cheaper then replacing a diff! lol

If he pulls the cvs and it goes away then thats what it is. NOT that there is a problem in the diff. well could be but unlikely.
