2003 Liberty - Renegade package.

Front drive shaft seal (boot?) is torn, shaft is dry, grindy noises result.
Jeep wants $555 for the front shaft, Strauss wants $250 to install.

Am I in the ballpark? Anyone know where to get an aftermarket one cheaper?

-------------------------------------------------

Also, I was told by Jeep & also Strauss that I need a Left Inner Tie Rod. Strauss can't get the Renegade one, only the standard.
Jeep says on the Renegade version the rod is part of the rack - $650. ?????

All '02-'06 KJ's use the same R&P,so all the inner/outer tie rods are the same.

All of these are easy enough to do with basic tools.

Check out www.RockAuto.com for cheap parts.

Hmmm, Interesting.

Strauss said they could get the "standard" tie rod but not the one for the Rennie and Jeep said the Rennie one only comes with the rack. Wierd! :?

www.RockAuto.com didn't list any separate parts for the Renegades.

AT - Automatic Trans
MT - Manual Trans

If you have AT, then you'll need to know which trans you have.

Good drive train places can also replace the worn end of the drive shaft. That's what we did on Eugene.

I just got back from a local Jeep place my brother told me about. (He waits till I have the thing for 7 years before he tells me!)
Turns out the guy builds Jeeps for crawling. Small shop but I was checking out some of his work - nice!
he's gettin a group together for Rausch creek this weekend, about 20 Jeeps.

He pulled the front shaft and is gonna have it rebuilt or if not then he'll get me a replacement. Less than $200 it looks like.

Said the tie rod is "barely" worn, not to worry.

:D

So now I'm drivin in 2wd for the weekend. If I hear any noise now, at least I'll know what it's not!

$200 sounds like a fine price for removing/reinstalling the driveshaft and replacing the joint and boot. If it comes down to replacing it, which a good driveshaft shop can nearly always avoid, you can get a new one for $100 or so less than you were quoted, and installing it is a piece of cake. History has shown that the front shaft can be removed in under 15 minutes with the simplest of socket sets while lying on a couple of floor mats in a foot of snow.
