Hey All, yeah I know another generic noise question. To the story, I was driving down the road the other night (35-40 mph) when all of sudden the KJ gave a jerking motion. This was accompanied by a low drone noise, like something was grinding. The jeep stayed straight, the rpms didn't jump and I was able to slow down with out a problem.
After stopping, I started back up without incident for another few miles. Then the jeep did the same thing again. Being that it just started snowing, I pulled into the next lot and made a left handed u turn. When I was half way through the turn, the right front end took a nose dive toward the right. It almost felt like there was a binding. After checking out the front end and seeing nothing, I backed back a foot then forward to finish my turn, no problems. I checked again and didn't see anything out of the normal.
I continued back home and made it a few miles back, before it made the drone again. After stopping, I placed it in 4 Hi and continued down the road with no noticeable difference. The times it was doing it, you could noticeably feel the seats and center console vibrate/ shake.
Yesterday, I pulled all the skids off and didn't see any over abundance of excess liquids on the skids. I did notice the front diff was wet w/ oil, but only at the very bottom at the seal. It wasn't that much as if the diff exploded (seen AZ Scouts do that). The cvs were also dry as was the drive shaft. After a few test drives in different transfer ranges I couldn't repeat the noise.
Anyway, anybody have any ideas where to start to diagnose the noise/ problem? I'm sure one of you front end gurus has a good idea.
Thanks much,
Mike
