Post subject:  System flush after rack & pinion replacement

In the paperwork that came with the re-manufactured rack and pinion that I got it says to flush the system after hooking up the new unit. Has anyone on the LOST 'board done this before? How much fluid will it take to flush and then refill the power steering system? What is the best fluid to use?

There is a procedure described in the instructions which I basically understand; I have bled brakes on a few different (older) cars before and I understand the concept. So how do I tell the pressure hose from the return line on the rack?

Of course, any suggestions on any part of the rack & pinion replacement job would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony aka MojaveKJ

To do a proper flush there is a special machine that is used,no way of doing it properly/safely to keep that warranty, sorry.I've done many at work after R&P installs, mostly on Grand Caravans.Use AFT+4 for the P/S fluid and the pressure line is the that screws into the bottom of the pump, the return line is clamped to the bottom of the tank.

Hey tjkj2002...where do you work? Nowhere near Los Angeles, CA I suppose?

Would it be a good idea to have this done at a shop as soon as possible (probably Monday after the Saturday, in my case) after the reassembly? or would the damage be done by that point? I could even have it towed there without doing any of the final connecting of lines and bleeding of the system.

Should I not install this R&P? I want to do as much as possible on the KJ myself and I feel I can handle the R&R well enough but now this flushing issue has me wondering.

Advice...??? Thanks.

If you are replacing the R&P due to a leak you will be fine waiting and getting it flushed when you have time.If internal damage was the reason for replacement get it flushed ASAP.
