I have some rust on my lower control arms partly from sand abrasion from beach driving and partly from some minor trail rock rash. It’s all just cosmetic surface rust but I want to deal with it before the roads get salted (tomorrow) and it gets any worse. I need to know how much do I need to clean things up? Do I have to sand down all of the rust or just spray right over it? Again, this is just surface cosmetic rust – a few months old, only the surface. I have some rustoleum primer spray paint that I was going to use to to cover it all up. If there is something better please let me know. |

It's probably too cold out unless you have a heated garage..... Paint won't cure.... Otherwise spray away! ![]() |

3M's professional Rubberized Undercoating,$10-$15 per can but well worth it,let dry at least 12 hours(when in the cold) before driving. |

I might have to get a can of that some time. See it at Wal Mart all the time I think. I noticed a "scab" on my passenger LCA. ![]() |

You might hit the rustwith a scotch brite pad first to getting as much off the flash-style rust off and to start with a cleaner base. The will also make help prevent the rusting process from continuing under the coating. |

If you want to do it right (as in the way restoration pros do it) - Step 1). Apply Rust Convertor. Step 2). Apply Rust Encapsulator. Step 3). Apply Chassis Black Satin. This satin will give the same result as brand new oem painted suspension parts. as in the parts will look like they did when the vehicle was brand new. There are Aersol and quart can applications of these products. Two other options include: A inexpensive Surface Rust Prep Kit Rustproofing & Undercoating System. Or you can always do it the hard way sanding )pads, discs, etc., not to mention also the cheaper way with rustoleum type paint. And it will look like it too. Your choice. |
