I was driving in the fresh 4 inches of snow we got last night, mostly in 2WD but I had to stop on a hill. Preparing to pull out into traffic I put it in 4WD HI (part time) and hit the gas. Then a horrible grinding noise! I thought I hadn't pulled the level far enough to engage 4WD, so I pushed it back into 2WD. All bad noises seemed to go away. A couple of minutes later and came across another road that hadn't been plowed, so I tried 4WD again. No bad noises, but it didn't seem like all 4 wheels had power. I switched back and forth between 2 and 4WD and then I noticed a WUBBWUBBWUBB noise, and when I hit a bump a grinding or phaser-type noise was coming from the front passenger wheel. I limped home in 2WD (still hearing the noise) and found this:

Please tell me that it's something simple like a broken CV, and not something serious like a blown diff!

Something is not right there...you inner cv is not seated all the way in the housing. Judging by the rust on the shaft, it has not been seated for a while.

In the second pic, you can see the inner stub is not in alignment with the housing. Also, The inner boot is compressed, indicating the inner cv is not seated in the housing.

I would recommend pulling the half-shaft out, check the housing, seal, and bearing for damage. Look inside the housing tube for damage, as the half shaft stub may be broken off inside. The halfshaft has been turning (connected to the wheel hub) without being seated, not a good scenario.

Yep looks like another failed intermediate shaft,the splines corrode and that little "C" clip breaks apart causing all sorts of fun.Sadly that intermediate shaft is a dealer only item,while your there get the "C" clips also(for spares) and then go a get a remaned CV and install(no "new" CV's unless you get OEM).Better get it fixed ASAP otherwise it can do more damage that will cost alot more $$$$$.

Thanks for the quick replys guys. The 4x4 shop I normally bring my Jeep to is about 12 miles away, and mostly 55 Mph roads. Can I drive it there? or should I have it towed? Also, what can I expect to pay for parts and labor for something like this?

easy repair,
200 in parts 150 intermediate shaft and 50 for a remanned CV from NAPA , 45 to 60 minutes of labor and back on the road :wink:

as far as driving, it can't get much worse unless you hammer on it, take it slow and easy!

Just got back from dropping it off at the shop. He said he didn't know how difficult or time consuming it was to replace the intermediate shaft, but his computer program showed 2 hours labor to replace just the CV shaft.

How much more work is required to replace the intermediate shaft too? Any tips that you can provide to help him out?

Some times the intermediate comes out with the CV if not then its just a matter of pulling it straight out, may have to sort of pop it out since there is a ring holding it . But 2 hours to do just the CV? wow!Passenger side is easier than the drivers I think.
