Post subject: | Is my wheel bearing bad ? |
Lately I've been getting a noise from the front end ( sounds like its the FL side of KJ ) that sounds like a metallic meshing/grinding all around not good noise. Has happened 4 times so far... First was while going about 30mph, accelerating to about 40mph. Noise occurred and lasted a few seconds. Second time I was getting off the highway and was decelerating from 60 to about 30 ( eventually stopped at a light ) and the noise lasted for about 10 seconds. Third time this happened was just after going over a rough RR crossing, doing about 30mph. Noise lasted about 5 seconds. Happened again tonight on the way home - was doing about 40 on a clean stretch of road and the noise kicked in and lasted about 20 seconds. In all cases, the noise was present until I stopped or came close to stopping ( < 5mph ), and went away as soon as I accelerated again like it was never there. Any ideas what this could be ? |

Check the CVs yet? Mine started out making a little noise at between 20 to 35/40 and then couldn't hear it. CV (passenger side) was starting to go, was rusted onto the intermediate shaft and starting to bind up. Swapped them out and no noise |

is there any way to look at/test the cvs w/out completely taking everything apart ? I checked the boots and there's no rips or tears. Did some tight circles and there's no clicking =/ |

My CV's did their noise wump starting at 40mph and "balanced" out at about 70mph. They are difficult to move, but there was some play right there at the joint in the one that went bad. A give away was when driving straight, move the steering wheel quick from side to side. One direction the CV click wump got real loud, one side it did not. Will that happen on all bad CV's? I dunno, but it did on mine. BTW, the side to side trick is the one reason we thought it was a wheel bearing when we were troubleshooting. I did however replaced a perfectly good wheel bearing for no reason $322.00. -The CV makes the similiar noise. Landy |

Come to think of it, I had a similar noise that started about 6 months ago but it was diagnosed as a rusty brake rotor. Now today this happened! ![]() http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=48660 Must have been the CV all along! |

Interesting... what you described is very similar to what I've been experiencing... I need to take a much better look at things in the daylight tomorrow ![]() |
