Post subject: | AntiFreeze odor coming out of heat vents...HELP PLEASE |
OK, I started up my car and started driving and about 3 miles of driving my heat went up to almost full temp, just like normal. So, I turned on the heat and this very strong smell of antifreeze came out of the vents. I could see something that looked like steam coming out too. It instantly fogged my whole windshield and i had to pull over. I checked everything under the hood, nothing out of the ordinary. I have a feeling it may be a Heater core gone bad. Any Ideas??? Please help as much as possible, I need to get my car fixed. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, EAGLE01 |

My Fold up an old towel and place it in your passenger floorboard kinda up towards the underside of the dash to catch the leaky coolant until you get it figured out. Also, watch your coolant level close. They usually just seep or drip, but you never know... You could have a loose or leaky hose or something... But it's prolly a heater core. I've had 3 go bad in other vehicles over the years and my daughter lost hers in her Nissan 4x4 truck. I have no experience on the Libby's heater core. I did one on a truck I had and it was a pig to get to. I did another on a Trans Am and had to pull out the inner fender. But, the one in the Nissan wasn't too bad. |

Yes. Probably a heater core. Not sure where it is, but I assume under the passenger side dash. That is the typical location. Once you find it, it is very easy to change. Just one inlet and one outlet hose. |

Quote: HVAC HOUSING
REMOVAL WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. NOTE: The HVAC housing must be removed from the vehicle and the two halves of the housing separated for service access of the heater core, evaporator coil, blend door, and each of the various mode doors. (1) Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. (2) Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL - REMOVAL). (3) If the vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning, go to Step 9. If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system (Refer to 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING - STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIGERANT RECOVERY) (4) Remove the accumulator and mounting bracket from the mounting studs on the dash panel. (5) Remove the nuts that secure the suction line and liquid line fittings to the evaporator tapping block (Fig. 7). (6) Disconnect the suction line and liquid line fittings from the evaporator tapping block. (7) Remove the seals from the suction line and liquid line fittings and discard. ( 8 ) Install plugs in, or tape over the opened suction line and liquid line fittings and both evaporator tapping block ports. (9) Drain the engine cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING - STANDARD PROCEDURE). (10) Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes. Install plugs in, or tape over the opened heater core tubes. (11) Disconnect the HVAC system vacuum supply line connector from the engine vacuum harness. (12) Remove the nuts that secure the HVAC housing to the dash panel in the engine compartment. (13) Remove the HVAC housing from inside the vehicle taking care not to allow any remaining coolant to drain on the vehicles interior. |

Quote: HEATER CORE
DESCRIPTION The heater core is located in the HVAC housing, behind the instrument panel. It is a heat exchanger made of rows of tubes and fins. OPERATION Engine coolant is circulated through the heater hoses and heater core at all times. As the coolant flows through the heater core, heat removed from the engine is transferred to the heater core fins and tubes. Air directed through the heater core picks up the heat from the heater core fins. The blend door allows control of the heater output air temperature by regulating the amount of air that is flowing through the heater core within the HVAC housing. The blower motor speed controls the volume of air flowing through the HVAC housing. The heater core cannot be repaired and, if faulty or damaged, it must be replaced. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. (1) Remove the HVAC housing (Refer to 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/DISTRIBUTION/ HVAC HOUSING - REMOVAL). (2) If equipped, remove the two screws that secure the heater core in the HVAC housing (Fig. 14). (3) Gently push back on the two heater core retaining tabs and remove the heater core from the HVAC housing. INSTALLATION (1) Position the heater core into the HVAC housing. (2) Push the top of the heater core down until the retaining tabs lock the heater core into place. (3) If equipped, install the two screws that secure the heater core to the HVAC housing. Tighten the screws to 2.2 N·m (20 in. lbs.). (4) Install the HVAC housing (Refer to 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/DISTRIBUTION/HVAC HOUSING - INSTALLATION). |

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t heater cores go bad due to poor maintenance? I’ve read that antifreeze becomes more acidic as it breaks down. The acid then corrodes your copper and aluminum parts from the inside out. |

Thats a crazy place to mount the heater core seems like a lot of work to get it out. Heater core went out on my sons truck in dec and had it changed out in a couple of hours. |
