OK, about a month and a half or so ago, I brought my KJ to Midas because the (original, I presume) brakes were starting to give me the "time to change pads" squealing. Everything was fine for a while after they changed out my pads. (*they only changed the rears, said the front still had 75% life left. Is this normal?) Then, over the past 2 weeks or so, I noticed that it felt like my brakes were sticking when the Jeep is cold. Now, it feels like they are dragging even at slow speed, and squealing again.

I noticed a mileage drop, but thought it was because of winter diesel. Now I'm thinking it is the brakes, dragging on the rotors. Haven't noticed undue heat, though.

What is the deal? What do I need to do? I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but one thing I have never messed with is brakes. I would just about rather disassemble the valvetrain than mess with brakes.

*Also, out of habit, I nearly always set my parking brake. Could it be that my parking brake cable is shot or something? Most of the sound seems to come from the port-side rear.

I know a lot of the older KJ's have issues with sticking calipers...

Well it mightbe old or dirty hardware.

Where the pads site, may not had been replace or cleaned. This part depends on the set up.
I have not looked at Jeep brakes yet.

But if you are handy, pull all the tires and take about the brakes.
Clean the sliders and lub the moving parts.

Then lightey sand the pad with sand paper. just enough to clean off the shine.
Put it back together and test drive.

if youa re not handy, ask the shop to show you the pads and inspect the stuff your self.

I noticed my passenger-rear brake was sticking this summer. I found it to be my e-brake. Temporary solution: Don't use the e-brake. :( This sucks when my Jeep has a manual transmission.

i had a problem with my brakes squealing too. they had aftermarket brake pads on and after awhile they figured out that jeeps don't like aftermarket. so they put on actual jeep brake pads and that stopped the squealing.

Troy replaced mine(rear) back in Feb or March and they (rear) already need replacing. Fronts are fine.

My '06 KJ had this issue.
I took her in and thumped the counter as reason is wasted on this mob.

Turns out:
There was a recall & the dealer (one of the few times I've been near them) replaced some components as:
QUOTE from dealers report:
Check brakes feel like they are staying on
Cause:
Rear brakes noisey/groaning/dragging noise.
Being vasused by warped rotors and pads.
Remedy/Rectification:
Machined rear rotors and replaced with Jeep modified rear pads and clips.
Bulletin Number 05-004-06.
Unquote

Other thing I would say IMHO is that I've bever been a fan of Kevlar brake pads as provided in the Jeep.
Mine don't even want to pull her up in low range 4wd on the slightest of hills.
I will replace with after market when I can.
I'm outa warranty now YAY!!!!

Also that stealer is a bit useless.
They just don't get to touch my lovely little diesel truck.

Historically, I have found that front pads wear faster than rears, so there has to be an imbalance there.
They always work harder by virtue of the physics.

Hope this helps
Auberon

Cool, good to know that there is a recall I can access. Do you have a reference number, or something I can use to make them do it FOR FREE when I get there? I can't find anything other than a recall on the Automatic Transmission park prawl anchor on the NHTSA website.

Man I hate even the very idea of bringing to the dealer. . . .

I actually had similiar issue, in my 07 after going to Midas for an inspection they claimed my rear brakes needed to replace. Midas said they wouldn't inspect me without it and I was 3 days over so I needed it done. Breaks were fine for a few weeks, went gentle no offroading or playing in mud or puddles. Then they started to squeak, Took the breaks apart, other then one scratch (for lack of a better word) they looked fine to me. I figured it was a vibration issue or something, breaks work fine and never squeak on a rainy day!

Front brake shoes should always wear down before the rears.
I will listen on my 05 and if the problem develops will complain to who ever owns Jeep now.
This recall number should be bulletin boarded to all here on LJ.
:furious:
